Benefits of cloud computing adoption for smart grid security from security perspective

JeongYeon Kim; Yanghoon Kim

Cloud computing is a new IT trend with several economic benefits and many applications are migrating to the cloud environment. However, there are concerns on its adoption for critical data infrastructure caused by security issues and privacy data. Survey results show the most sensitive items of IT managers for cloud platform adoption are cost efficiency and data security. To review the benefits and challenges of cloud environment adoption in critical infrastructure, we identify new energy system of smart grid as an example. Also, we compare the well-defined security requirements of smart grid system with current cloud computing status to check if smart grid system can use cloud computing environment from the security perspective. In addition to functional review, we anticipate the changes of security investment efficiency after cloud environment adoption.

Effects of Corporate Social Responsibility and Governance on Its Credit Ratings

Dong-young Kim; JeongYeon Kim

This study reviews the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate governance on its credit rating. The result of regression analysis to credit ratings with relevant primary independent variables shows that both factors have significant effects on it. As we have predicted, the signs of both regression coefficients have a positive sign (+) proving that corporates with excellent CSR and governance index (CGI) scores have higher credit ratings and vice versa. The results show nonfinancial information also may have effects on corporate credit rating. The investment on personal data protection could be an example of CSR/CGI activities which have positive effects on corporate credit ratings.

Intelligent data management framework for advanced Web service

JeongYeon Kim; Yanghoon Kim

The paradigm of rich Internet application (RIA) emerged since users’ tendency to use Web applications was changed for the sake of convenience, and the Flex was presented as a platform to develop the RIA with the advantage of prevalence by the Adobe. The Flex is mainly configuring to combine user screens. According to this feature, it has insufficient compatibility and maintainability. Event or rich UI-oriented Cairngorm and PureMVC frameworks are being used as developmental methodology for Flex, but they lack the capability of satisfying data-oriented service for providing service with connectivity of various types of data. Accordingly, this paper designed and implemented the FMT framework for data-oriented service.

A study on performance evaluation of intelligent collaboration system

JeongYeon Kim; Yanghoon Kim; Hangbae Chang

According as competition environment of businesses is generally expanded to that of corporate networks from a simple corporate linkage structure throughout the industries, coexistence between businesses and exterior stakeholders becomes more important than ever. This study conducted quantitative performance analysis for big/small medium businesses (mother company, cooperating companies) which carried out collaboration for procurement and production in the form of a virtual company for production of final products through electronic information sharing. The analysis result found that small and medium-sized cooperating companies had more benefit than mother company and there was more benefit in delivery management than logistics management in comparison. Along the way, it was found that cooperating companies could achieve significant performance through collaboration system only when their business dependence on mother company should be more than critical point.

Decision making for the adoption of cloud computing for sensor data: from the viewpoint of industrial security

Chang Jin Koo; JeongYeon Kim

Utilizing cloud computing platform to meet the new business requirements brought several business and technical benefits including cost-saving, high scalability, and business risk reductions. The new requirements of sensor-based systems for computing and communication also need cloud platforms. Based on the survey results of Korean companies, we analyze important factors of decision making for cloud platform adoption. Survey results show the cost efficiency is the most important factor for cloud platform adoption. With the economic benefits of cloud computing utilization, we provide basic arguments on data sharing issue with infrastructure providers, which requires additional investments to implement data management policies in cloud computing environment.

Interplay of entrepreneur, government, and industry in the development of ventures: the case of emerging IT industry in Korea

Youngkeun Choi; JeongYeon Kim

This article examines how an entrepreneur’s strategic choice influences corporate development leading to the initial public offering. The data come from Korean startups in information technology industry. We consider the dynamic interplay between an entrepreneur’s attributes and government’s institutional support as key factors. An empirical analysis of 615 listed companies shows that an entrepreneur’s attributes play a significant role in market entry especially in information technology industry which tends to have shorter lead time to the initial public offering. Government certification and venture capital investment also facilitated corporate growth toward the public company status.

Enforcing high-level security policies for Internet of Things

Chang Jin Koo; JeongYeon Kim

IoT is rapidly a developing area, but there are uncertainties about its security and privacy issues. In several IoT services, important data such as personal information are shared between system components. While it may simplify repetitive transactions, keeping the personal information increases the likelihood of identity theft causing direct or indirect damage. This study introduces quantitative analysis based on demand–supply curve for the damage caused by leakages of personal identification information and shows how security investment is decided to adopt high-level security compliance.

Empirical Analysis of Retirement Pension and IFRS Adoption Effects on Accounting Information: Glance at IT Industry

JeongYeon Kim

This study reviews new pension accounting with K-IFRS and provides empirical changes in liability for retirement allowances with adoption of K-IFRS. It will help to understand the effect of pension accounting on individual firms financial report and the importance of public announcement of actuarial assumptions. Firms that adopted K-IFRS had various changes in retirement liability compared to the previous financial report not based on K-IFRS. Their actuarial assumptions for pension accounting should be announced, but only few of them were published. Data analysis shows that the small differences of the actuarial assumption may result in a big change of retirement related liability. Firms within IT industry also have similar behaviors, which means that additional financial regulations for pension accounting are recommended.
