Abstract Social enterprises receive a lot of attention, because of their ability to balance social service-enhancing and profit-making activities. They can survive and have financial sustainability in markets and provide social services that would otherwise not be provided due to the failure of private or government provision. In the Korean context, social enterprises have another function – to provide jobs and increase employment rates in times of low economic growth and growing inequality. Given this situation, it is useful for researchers to investigate what types of partners provide particular sorts of resources to social enterprises and what types of resources from such partners may have mediating effects on the relationship between partnerships and the social performance of social enterprises. First, this research shows that all partners of social enterprises provide financial support and public and social partners provide marketing support, while private partners do not provide marketing support. However, no partners provide any managerial support. Second, public and social partners are helpful for the social performance of social enterprises but their financial support influences the social performance of social enterprises negatively. Private partners and their financial support also influence the social performance of social enterprises negatively.

This article examines how an entrepreneur’s strategic choice influences corporate development leading to the initial public offering. The data come from Korean startups in information technology industry. We consider the dynamic interplay between an entrepreneur’s attributes and government’s institutional support as key factors. An empirical analysis of 615 listed companies shows that an entrepreneur’s attributes play a significant role in market entry especially in information technology industry which tends to have shorter lead time to the initial public offering. Government certification and venture capital investment also facilitated corporate growth toward the public company status.

Developing countries need to strengthen their research capabilities in order to catch up with advanced countries. For this, a country’s activities to develop, adapt, and harness its innovative capacity are critical for its economic performance in the long run (Ernst & Naughton, 2008). As new technology-based ventures (NTBVs) introduce disruptive technologies and perform the role of Schumpeterian entrepreneurship, or “creative destruction,” in the economy, they are an especially important source of new jobs and provide a crucial stimulus to national economies (Audretsch, 1995). So the factors that drive their performances have increasingly attracted the attention of entrepreneur-ship scholars as well as policy makers. While there is considerable literature on factors affecting the survival of new firms, relatively few of these focus on NTBVs, and there are even fewer studies on the individual founders of such ventures (Colombo & Grilli, 2009). Previous studies on the effect of human capital on new firm survival have often employed an insufficient range of human capital types or inappropriate proxies (Gimmon & Levie, 2009).

In the entrepreneurship field, this study examines what kinds of external endorsements are helpful for venture capitals investment and the growth of new technology ventures in developing countries. This study uses the signalling theory and the methodologies of multiple regression and survival analysis with the panel data of the ventures in Korea. In the results, collaboration with business groups and certification of government are positively influential in attracting venture capitals’ investment, which accelerate the growth of new technology ventures. The practical implication for entrepreneurs is that they need to obtain the endorsement from business groups and governments strategically.
