The alignment properties of the azo dye photo-alignment material SD-1/SDA-2 on plastic substrates are investigated. Excellent alignment with high anchoring energy can be achieved with a polarized UV dose less than 1.0 J/cm2. A reflective 6-digit flexible passive matrix driven TN-LCD for smart card applications showing excellent electro-optical properties is demonstrated.

The singlepolarizer BiNem LCD epaper display is optimized for ereading applications. By compensating with a biaxial halfwave retarder, contrast enhancement and increased viewing angles are realized, and parallax is eliminated with an internal reflector. Optimized AR/AG coating and diffuse adhesive improves the display legibility and reading comfort. Compatibility with internalreflector aSiTFT substrates is demonstrated.

A series of novel bifunctionalized photochromic monomers were synthesized, focusing on those with polymerizable acrylic/methacrylic groups attached to both ends of an azobenzene core via flexible spacers. The phase behaviour of the monomers was investigated using DSC, polarizing optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The change in UV‐vis absorbance of the monomers under illumination with non‐polarized/polarized UV light was studied for both solutions and thin films; also studied was its relaxation in the dark. On illumination with LPUV light, in‐plane reorientation of the molecules normal to the polarization of the exciting UV light, and aggregation of the molecules in the films, were found.

A contrast-enhanced, high-speed polarization modulator for active-retarder 3D displays is proposed. By using a double-cell structure together with a dedicated driving scheme and an external quarter-wave retarder, a high-performance modulator can be realized, resulting in minimized brightness loss and low crosstalk levels in fast-refresh, time-multiplexed 3D displays.

We describe a new alignment material for BiNem® displays with improved azimuthal / zenithal anchoring energies that show no after-image effects and can withstand low and high temperature storage tests. We also describe a partial image refreshing driving mode to improve the response time of BiNem displays. We introduce display modules designed for electronic shelf label and e-dictionary applications.

— The first implementation of active-matrix addressing on a BiNem bistable nematic liquid-crystal display has been demonstrated. Compared to previous passive-matrix addressing, major improvements have been made for the bistable mode: a smoother image refreshment, shorter refreshing frame time compatible with that of high-resolution e-book displays, the use of a touch screen for interactive functions such as hand-writing, a virtual keyboard, improved functionality for scrolling menus, partial refreshment, etc. On the same display but in the monostable mode, by using electrically controlled birefringence (ECB), the potential of displaying moving pictures at a rate of 25 images/sec, at an extended room temperature, has been demonstrated. In the ECB monostable mode, static images can be displayed down to −20°C. A new transflective single-polarizer optical mode has been developed to optimize the indoor and outdoor readability of the display. By lowering the surface reflection and enhancing the panel transmission, a contrast ratio of 94:1 and a transmittance of 17% have been achieved.

Optical modes for the direct view single-polarizer reflective bistable nematic display are derived using Jones matrix method. Both theoretical and experimental results show that these modes possess excellent brightness, high contrast ratio and wide viewing angles. Bistable switching realized by anchor breaking on a photosensitive polymer is demonstrated.

Optical modes for the surface-controlled direct-view single-polarizer reflective BTN (bistable twisted nematic) LCD (liquid-crystal display) are derived with the Jones matrix method. The modes show excellent brightness and high contrast ratio. By use of a quarter-wave retardation film in the optical configuration, the contrast can be increased.
