A 7 month-old, male Katjang cross goat weighing 35kg with body condition score of 3/5 was presented to Large Animal Ward, University Veterinary Hospital (UVH). The goat had pale mucous membrane and diarrhoea. The goat had moderate normocytic, normochromic anaemia with packed cell volume (PCV) of 0.14 (0.22-0.32) and low normal plasma protein, neutrophilia with left shift and monocytosis, including hyponatraemia, hypocalcaemia and hypoalbuminaemia with increased muscle enzyme (CK). Thin blood film stained with Geimsa showed evidence of blood parasites and mycoplasma sp. 0.1 % of RBC was infected and with high strongyle infestation (13900 epg) using modified McMaster technique. Blood transfusion was done as a result of decreased PCV value to 0.13 on the second day of hospitalization. Aim: This study examined the effects of creep feed (CF) supplementation (with or without Alfalfa) on the pre-weaning growth performance of nursing goat kids. Materials and Methods: A total of forty eight (48), 7 days old, single born kids (live weight 4.4±0.09 kg) were divided into three treatment groups, each containing eight males and eight females. All three groups had access to their dams’ milk (DM). The kids from the first treatment group had free access to CF containing alfalfa (CFA) while those from the second group had free access to CF without alfalfa. The third treatment group (control) had access to their DM only. All three groups were kept isolated from the dams from 800 to 1200 h and from 1400 to 1800 h while having access to CF. Results: Total weight gain and average daily gain of kids from CFA group (11.2±0.36 kg, 145.2±4.64 g) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than kids from CF (7.9±0.49 kg, 102.9±6.43 g) and DM (5.5±0.43 kg, 71.1±5.56 g) groups. The weaning weight of kids from CFA group (15.6±0.39 kg) was significantly higher (p<0.05) than those from CF (12.1±0.56 kg) and DM (9.9±0.59 kg) groups. Conclusion: This result shows that supplementation of CF combined with alfalfa from birth to weaning enhances growth performance of cross-bred Boer goat kids.

Foot rot is a painful condition resulting in moderate to severe lameness in cattle but with early intervention and vigorous treatment, most cases will have a favourable outcome. A 4 year old Kedah-Kelantan cow weighing 250kg was presented to the large animal unit of the University Veterinary Hospital, Universiti Putra Malaysia, with the complain of lameness for 5 days. Physical examination findings were pyrexia, inappetence and lameness. Blood analysis revealed neutrophilia with left shift, while the biochemical analysis revealed an increase in aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase and globulin levels. Bacterial culture from the swab samples of the cows hoof revealed growth of Corynebacterium pyogenes. The hoof was disinfected with povidone iodine and Benacillin injection (25mg/kg), Flunixine meglumine (1.1 mg/kg) and multivitamin (10mg/kg) injections were administered intramuscularly. The hoof was washed with 5% copper sulphate solution once daily. The prognosis was good after a follow up visit one week later. Early intervention is paramount in addressing foot rot caused by bacterial organisms in cattle.

Four adult Friesian cross cows were experiencing intermittent diarrhea and chronic weight loss in a dairy farm in Dengkil, Negeri Sembilan. They were managed semi-intensively with pelleted diet and kept with a herd of 80 dairy cattles. One of the cattle, Kuning, experienced drop in milk yield from 10L/day to 2L/day. Physical examination revealed a poor body condition score of 2/5 in all 4 cattles, although they have good appetite. The differential diagnoses were Johnes disease, fascioliasis, chronic salmonellosis and coccidiosis. Laboratory diagnosis of Ziehl- Neelsen stained faecal smears from all 4 cattles revealed presence of acid fast bacteria. Haematology and serum biochemistry results of all 4 cattles shown lymphocytosis and hyperglobulinemia. Based on the compatible clinical signs, haematology and serum biochemistry results, presence of acid fast bacteria, diagnosis of suspected Johnes disease is made. A herd screening revealed 9 out of 30 cattles had acid fast stained bacteria in the faeces.

A 1 week old male Boer cross breed goat weighing 3 kg was managed intensively in a cemented enclosure. The case was presented to the Ambulatory Unit of the Large Animal Ward, University Veterinary Hospital (UVH), Universiti Putra Malaysia. The kid was fed with colostrum. The patient was presented with swollen knee joint on both forelimbs, series of intermittent seizures, paddling, opisthotonus and torticollis. There was also loss of menace response and pupillary light reflex which indicates loss of sight of both eye s. The kid died and post mortem was conducted with the findings of severe congestion of the brain and spinal cord, mild congestion of the lung, kidney, liver and gastrointestinal tract. There were swelling of the knee joint of both forelimbs and suppurative synovial fluids. Histology revealed there were severe generalised congestion of the lung, brain and spinal cord. There were thickening of the intra-alveolar septa with some inflammatory cells and evidence of spongiosis in the central nervous system.
