A new problem, estimation of the direction of arrival (DOA) without knowing (or assuming) the number of signal sources, is addressed. The authors propose a method which is related to both the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) and Capons methods. The performance of the proposed method when the number of signal sources is unknown is shown to be almost the same as that of the MUSIC method when the number of signal sources is exactly known.<<ETX>>

The performance of a DS/SSMA (direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiaccess) system with hard-limiting correlation receivers is analyzed over nonselective Rician fading channels with impulsive noise. More specifically, computation of the average bit-error probabilities of the DS/SSMA system have been accomplished in this paper by exact computation for short spreading sequences and by approximation for long spreading sequences.<<ETX>>

We present an algorithm for identification of moving average systems using the third- and fourth-order cumulants of noisy observations. The system is driven by an independent and identically distributed non-Gaussian signal which has an asymmetric probability density function, and the Gaussian measurement noise may be either white or colored. The proposed algorithm is more useful than other linear methods when the characteristic of noise is not known or when the signal-to-noise ratio is low.<<ETX>>

In this paper we consider the discrete-time known signal detection problem under a weakly dependent noise model, and derive the locally optimum, memoryless, and one-memory detector test statistics under the model. The asymptotic performance of several detectors are investigated. We observe that the one-memory detector can achieve almost optimum performance at the expense of only one memory unit under the weakly dependent noise model.<<ETX>>

The performance of DS/SSMA systems with nonlinear correlation receivers is analyzed over a Rician fading channel with impulsive noise. More specifically, analyses of the bit error probabilities of the DS/SSMA systems using hard-limiter correlation receivers have been accomplished. The average-bit error probabilities for hard-limiting correlator are computed.<<ETX>>

In this paper, the noncoherent reception performance of frequency hopping spread spectrum communication systems operated in channels with impulsive noise and selective multipath fading characteristics is investigated. Binary frequency shift keying modulation and noncoherent demodulation are assumed and squarers are used to detect signals. The bit error rates are obtained as functions of channel and system parameters.<<ETX>>
