The paper sheet drying process consumes about 70% of the total energy required in coated papermaking, and almost all the thermal energy used in the process can be found in the exhaust air; thus, it has significant potential to recover the heat. With the aim of saving energy, the recovered energy is usually used to heat different process streams instead of steam. This article examines the drying process of an operating coating paper machine to demonstrate an optimization method. To study the possibility of improving energy efficiency, thermodynamic analysis was conducted. The reasons why there is so much heat lost during drying were investigated. Based on the results of the energy and exergy analysis, a new waste heat integration scheme is presented. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated. The results of the case study show an energy efficiency improvement of 7.3% and a specific energy consumption reduction of 4.6% with profitable investments.

Due to high energy consumption in the Chinese paper industry, this study considers higher-energy efficiency for the multicylinder dryer section of paper machines. A common situation in the Chinese paper industry is that energy is consumed in extensive mode. In order to improve the energy efficiency of the paper machine dryer section, deeper analysis and optimization of process parameters are necessary. A NLP optimization method is developed for integration of steam system and air system to reduce the steam consumption and decrease the loads of centrifugal blowers in the multicylinder dryer section of a paper machine. Equality constraints of the optimization model are extracted from different process modules based on material and energy balance. Inequality constraints are from the production capacity, operating condition, etc. Two illustrative examples are presented in this paper. The results show that the optimization model is adaptive and convenient for application. For a newsprint machine, less dry air and steam are used and the energy consumption can be reduced by about 8% in the dryer section. Applied on a linerboard machine which has surface sizing, the method can reduce the energy consumption by 5.6%.

For implementing the information resource management for process operation system integration development, an information model is proposed. Firstly, the product data is described by the data format language EXPRESS of the standard for the exchange of product. Secondly, the extensible markup language is used to communicate the STEP data to implement a distributed product information sharing model. Finally, the practicability and validity of the information model are verified through the application in the hydrodealkylation process.

To get a soft-sensor model of sheet relative area (RBA) which can be measured online, a new method to measure individual fibre flexibility index were discussed in this paper, and the relationships among RBA, light scattering coefficient S, sheet density and fiber flexibility index were also researched. a new simple equation was derived for evaluating the RBA with fiber flexibility index. The novel method contributes to understand the fibre bonding mechanism and to establish model to realize real-time predicting the paper tensile strength for paper mill.

The condensers influence on turbines thermal efficiency were researched in this paper. The optimization model for the system of condensers, turbines, cooling water and cooling water towers fan was proposed based on the basic model of turbines, condensers and cooling water. One paper mill power plant was taken as a case to verify the optimization model; the result showed that the optimization model was practical and useful for paper mill power plant.

For meeting the demands of chemical process simulation, an approach to integrating the defined software and the profession simulation software is proposed. Firstly, the paper developed the software integration framework for the chemical process operation system base on information sharing. Secondly, the corresponding models between defined software and common simulation software are developed based on ActiveX technology. Finally, the proposed approach and technology are verified through its application in the solvent recovery system. A unit of system is simulated with neural network, while other units are simulated by ASPEN PLUS.

According the characteristics of both steam and power was used in paper mill, the optimal running model of the coal-fired power-heat system was researched in this paper. The power plants physical structure was researched, the superstructure was established and the boiler and turbine running model was analyzed. With the help of mathematical programming, each turbine unit optimal loads were obtained when the same power and steam were produced, moreover, the minimum coal cost were calculated with each boiler unit optimal coal feeding distribution. The case study of one paper mill showed that the coal consumption can decrease 4.7% aiding with the optimization model of power-heat system.

This paper presents a three-phase energy model for the measurement and analysis of energy system in papermaking processes. A new classification and implementation procedure is made for the three-phase modelling. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modelling technique, a paper mill has been taken as an example where the energy and exergy efficiencies have been obtained and the potential production units for energy saving have been identified and the improvement on the efficiency of energy usage in the mill is presented. The result shows that the proposed three-phase model can provide a quantitative analysis tool for the assessment of the energy system in papermaking.
