Tradition, History, and Our Story: Some Observations on Jacob and Esau in the Books of Obadiah and Malachi

In both Genesis and early prophecy, Jacob, the father of the chosen people of Israel, is harshly criticized for the shrewd trickery that he employs to supplant his brother Esau. The role reversal of the twins thus challenges later biblical authors. It is argued in this study that, from the way this tradition is used for purposes of communication in Obadiah and Malachi, two alternative interpretations may be discerned. While Obadiah explains the role reversal as a result of Esaus misconduct, Malachi interprets it as an inscrutable act of divine election. Tracing the latter approach in Pauls letter to the Romans, both the bearing of these actualizing interpretations on the tradition itself and the way different communities used it as common story are observed.

Individualisierung des Bundesbruchs? Die neuere Deutung von Gen 17,14 im Licht der Vergleichsbelege

Zusammenfassung: Die als »Bundesbruch« bezeichnete Nichtbeachtung des Beschneidungsgebots wird in Gen 17,14 mit der karet-Sanktion belegt, mithin unter Bezug auf den Einzelnen geregelt. Das deutet aber gerade nicht darauf hin, der Bundesbruch werde, wie die neuere Deutung annimmt, von P gezielt individualisiert, um kollektive Katastrophen des Gottesverhältnisses künftig auszuschließen. Im Gegenteil, wie die Vergleichsbelege zeigen, wird die Sanktion durchgängig gerade dort eingesetzt, wo der Einzelne durch ein Verhalten, das in seinen individuellen Verantwortungsbereich fällt, die Gemeinschaft als Ganze gefährdet. Dieses Ergebnis hat erhebliche Implikationen für die Rekonstruktion der priesterlichen Bundestheologie, insofern es deren weithin geteilte Deutung im Sinne eines »reinen Gnadenbundes« fraglich erscheinen lässt.

Kuntillet ʿAjrud Inscription 4.3: A Note on the Alleged Exodus Tradition

It has been proposed recently to read the heavily fragmented plaster inscription 4.3 from Kuntillet ʿAjrud as an attestation of the Exodus tradition. Based on the marked differences from the comparative biblical material, far-reaching conclusions regarding the evolution of the Exodus tradition have been drawn. But the reading suffers from serious problems.
