Landscapes, a synthesis between traditional heritage and innovative elements, are important focus of cultural geography analysis. Because those landscapes reflect power relations, symbolic features such as some buildings, toponymy, the statuary and other spatial elements of celebration construct contested, disputed and not always consensual landscapes. Although it is a city of low density and sparse polarization, Pombal presents a complex hybrid, not always well articulated urban landscape showing local and non local narrative geographic symbols. That low density urban landscape represents heterogeneous elements such as the close rural environment, the historic cycles of migration, the industrialization dynamics and the most recent and tenuous postmodern drift. In spite of this diversity, Pombal is mainly a space of celebration and nostalgia for the past.

An event that took place in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park was an opportunity to promote geocaching as a different geographic experience and a relevant tool to strengthen the tourist image of places suffering from a poor external representation. Following the example of this network of villages, geocaching is also an additional activity in a wide multifunctional appropriation of rural spaces, now open to tourism and leisure activities, especially in this particular region of heritage and a rocky landscape shaped by water courses.

When invested in transports, technological innovation has led to the shortening of geographical distances. However, the development of digital social networks apparently meant a serious step towards a more sedentary way of life. In fact, empirical data do not confirm these deterministic theories. Far from this negative perspective, the democratization of technology proved to be a factor of spatial mobility, avoiding the non therapeutic sedentary lifestyle and even encouraging the experience of travel. Geocaching, as a tourism and leisure practice which is growing particularly in Europe and North America, expresses how the use of new positioning techniques has changed personal territorialities, leading its practitioners to contact places and landscapes which so far revealed little centrality and attractiveness.
