ABSTRACT In this study the authors compared two differentprocedures of ovariosalpingohysterectomy (OSH) in dogs. Forthat, 18 dogs were randomly assigned into 2 different groups:group I (GI) in which the OSH was performed by celiotomyand group II (GII) in which it was a video-assisted procedureusing two portals positioned in the umbilical and pre pubicregions, under dorsal recumbence position. In both groups themethod of hemostasis was the Ligasure Atlas ® . The authors didnot observe significant differences between both methods forthe surgical time or complications during and after the surgicalprocedure and blood loss. It was concluded that OSH usingvideo-assisted surgery with two portals and the conventionaltechnique, both using Ligasure Atlas ® are safe, fast and effectiveto be used in dogs. Key words : bipolar energy, laparoscopic assisted surgery, canine. A 2-year-old female mixed-breed cat weighing 2.7 kg presented with recurrent rectal prolapse. The following report describes its treatment by laparoscopic-assisted incisional colopexy using two portals. The procedure was effective and without trans- or postoperative complications. Recurrent prolapses did not recur in the 2 months of postoperative observation.

Ovarian remnant syndrome (ORS) refers to the presence of functional ovarian tissue in a previously ovariohysterectomized animal. This report describes a case of remaining ovary syndrome in a cat that was submitted to ovariohysterectomy six months later. Three laparoscopic portals of 5mm were created in the abdominal walls (in the right and left lateral abdominal flank, and one in the ventral abdominal midline). It was observed the presence of one mass in the site of ovarians region. Both tissues were removed using Metzenbaum scissors and monopolar cauterization. The histological examination demonstrated ovarian tissue in the left carried by side. The post-operative time was uneventful. The treatment of ovarian remnant syndrome in a cat can be successfully performed by laparoscopic surgery.

There are many respiratory diseases in small animals, as well as the possibilities of diagnoses, as laboratory and radiographic exams, bronchoalveolar lavage and biopsies. This research aimed at assessing the results of transdiaphragmatic paraxiphoid thoracoscopies in pulmonary biopsies of thirteen clinically healthy dogs. Under general anesthesia, each dog was insufflated with 30ml kg-1 of air in each hemithorax; two trocars were placed between the xiphoid appendix and the costal arch through the diaphragm. An endoscope was introduced by the first portal; while the second portal was used to allow access to the nippers in the biopsy forceps. Then, these nippers were removed and replaced by chest tube drainage. During the procedures, respiratory frequency, heart rate, oxygen saturation, arterial pressure and central venous pressure (CVP), hemogasometric parameters were checked. Within 48 hours after the surgery, drains were or drain was removed, with minimal production of air and/or liquid. In conclusion, this is a fast and safe technique, which is free of trans and post surgical complications, thus allowing the collection of sufficient material for pulmonary histological evaluation.

The aim of the present study was to assess the use of transdiaphragmatic paraxiphoid thoracoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of experimentally induced pneumothorax in dogs. Severe pneumothorax was induced in 11 dogs by the insufflation of 10mL kg-1of air into each hemithorax until they became hemodynamically unstable. The correlation between central venous pressure (CVP) and the volume of injected air (mL kg-1) was determined, and was considered too heart rate, respiratory frequency, capillary refill time, oxygen saturation and the color of mucous membranes. Pneumothorax was treated with chest tube drainage with the placement of a trocar into the right side (six dogs) or into the left side (five dogs) of the xiphoid appendix through the diaphragm. The introduction of air volume equal to or greater than 50ml kg-1hemitorax-1 caused cardiorespiratory decompensation and increased the CVP to levels higher than 10cmH2O in all patients. Transdiaphragmatic paraxiphoid thoracoscopy allowed for adequate examination of the chest cavity and for effective drainage without any intraoperative and postoperative complications, as confirmed by intercostal thoracoscopy 15 days after surgery. The method for induction of pneumothorax and the chest tube placement technique proposed for its management are appropriate to be used in dogs.

The little spotted cat or oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus) is a wild feline that has size and body proportions similar to the domestic cat (Felis catus), but can be classified as the smallest wild feline all the way from Costa Rica to Brazil and Argentina threatened with extinction. In domestic cats, the distal portion of the long bone femur is more susceptible to fractures. The aim of this paper is to report the treatment of a complete, transverse, supracondylar fracture of the right femur on a five-month-old little female oncilla, by internal fixation by two crossed Kirschner wires. At 60 days after surgery, the patient was discharged from the veterinary hospital and returned to its place of origin. Considering the authors knowledge, this is the first report of osteosynthesis in L. tigrinus using this described technique. Due to similarities with species, anatomical, surgical and anesthetics data of domestic cats were considered. The fixation method was successful and limb function was achieved without any complication.

A technique of hepatic biopsy by transvaginal approach (NOTES - Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) is proposed. Seven dogs were used, and the experiment was divided into two stages including the liver biopsy and the evaluation of laparoscopic abdominal conditions after biopsy (53 days after). The animals were submitted to vaginal incision after exposition through the vulva. Through the vaginal incision was introduced a flexible endoscope of 11mm with two working channels, was introduced through the vaginal incision and used to obtain liver samples. The variables analyzed to verify the feasibility of the proposed biopsy were: operative time, surgical complications, technical difficulties, the quality of sample collected, the formation of vaginal adhesions and their characteristics and the biochemical condition of the liver. In conclusion, the liver biopsy by endoscopic transvaginal access is feasible in dogs. It permits to take appropriated hepatic samples for histological studies without changinghepatic parameters and intraperitoneal adhesions.
