Soft agglomerates containing pantoprazole-loaded microparticles were developed with the aim of prompt delivery of gastro-resistant particles. The objective was to evaluate the relative bioavailability in dogs after the oral administration of soft agglomerates. Gastro-resistant pantoprazole-loaded microparticles prepared by spray drying were mixed with mannitol/lecithin spray-dried powder and agglomerated by vibration. One single oral dose (40mg) was administered to dogs. Each dog received either a reference tablet or hard gelatin capsules containing the agglomerates. The plasma profiles were evaluated by non-compartmental and compartmental approaches, and the pharmacokinetic parameters were determined. The agglomerates presented 100% of drug particle loading and a production yield of 80.5%. The amount of drug absorbed after oral dosing was similar after reference or agglomerate administration, leading to a relative bioavailability of 108%. The absorption lag-time was significantly reduced after agglomerate administration (from 135.5+/-50.6 to 15.0+/-2.5min). The agglomerated gastro-resistant pantoprazole-loaded microparticles reduced time to peak plasma. The agglomerates were equivalent to the reference tablets in terms of extent but not in terms of rate of absorption, showing that this formulation is an alternative to single-unit oral dosing with enteric coating and with the advantage of reducing time to effect.

Ovarian remnant syndrome (ORS) refers to the presence of functional ovarian tissue in a previously ovariohysterectomized animal. This report describes a case of remaining ovary syndrome in a cat that was submitted to ovariohysterectomy six months later. Three laparoscopic portals of 5mm were created in the abdominal walls (in the right and left lateral abdominal flank, and one in the ventral abdominal midline). It was observed the presence of one mass in the site of ovarians region. Both tissues were removed using Metzenbaum scissors and monopolar cauterization. The histological examination demonstrated ovarian tissue in the left carried by side. The post-operative time was uneventful. The treatment of ovarian remnant syndrome in a cat can be successfully performed by laparoscopic surgery.

A technique of hepatic biopsy by transvaginal approach (NOTES - Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) is proposed. Seven dogs were used, and the experiment was divided into two stages including the liver biopsy and the evaluation of laparoscopic abdominal conditions after biopsy (53 days after). The animals were submitted to vaginal incision after exposition through the vulva. Through the vaginal incision was introduced a flexible endoscope of 11mm with two working channels, was introduced through the vaginal incision and used to obtain liver samples. The variables analyzed to verify the feasibility of the proposed biopsy were: operative time, surgical complications, technical difficulties, the quality of sample collected, the formation of vaginal adhesions and their characteristics and the biochemical condition of the liver. In conclusion, the liver biopsy by endoscopic transvaginal access is feasible in dogs. It permits to take appropriated hepatic samples for histological studies without changinghepatic parameters and intraperitoneal adhesions.

This paper describes the use of titanium mesh as an alternative for reconstruction of bone defect created by resection of aggressive squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal bridge in a dog. After chemotherapy with topic and systemic 5-fluorouracil associated with piroxicam for the tumor mass reduction, it was performed a surgical resection of the affected region, repair of bone defects with titanium mesh and subsequent closing of the wound with musculocutaneous single pedicle advancement flap. The main complication in the postoperative period was the formation of subcutaneous emphysema, which was controlled in three days with air drainage and application of compression bandages. The animal remained without signs of recurrence for eight months. In the tenth month postoperatively, the patient presented myiasis in local recurrence and the owner opted for euthanasia. In this case, it was possible to conclude that titanium mesh was a suitable material for the reconstruction of the nasal bridge, having as main complication the occurrence of subcutaneous emphysema.
