Mechatronic Component Packages within Gasoline Direct Injection Systems and their Impact on OEM-Supplier-Cooperation

Abstract With gasoline direct injection (DI) technology becoming more widely spread among car manufacturers (OEMs) worldwide, challenging – and sometimes contradictory – requirements towards the DI system and also the involved subsystems are addressed to the suppliers. One way of improving the performance of the elements of modern DI systems at moderate add-on costs is the employment of mechatronics. Currently two mechatronic approaches are used for DI components. For the high pressure pump, the actuation of the fuel control valve (FCV) is gradually adjusted in order to minimize the noise generation by the high dynamic switch valve. For the high pressure injector, a closed-loop control of the needle opening duration enables the injection of extremely small quantities. The introduction of mechatronic functions brings about implications for the engine management system (EMS) as a whole, which in turn influences established cooperation models between OEMs and their suppliers. This includes all aspects of the EMS project: hardware, software, calibration and testing.
