Susceptibility of Human Tumor Cells to ECHO Viruses and Loss of Hemagglutinating Capacity of Some of the Adapted Viruses

Prototype ECHO viruses were studied quantitatively for their ability to adapt to stationary tube cultures of HeLa and KB human tumor cell lines, and for the hemagglutinating activity of the human tumor cell (HTCC) adapted ECHO viruses. According to criteria presented, ECHO types 2, 3, 6, 9, 11, 19, 20, and 24 adapted to HeLa cells, and these plus type 5, were propagated in KB cultures. However other lines of HeLa and KB cells that we obtained subsequently did not exhibit the same susceptibility to these ECHO viruses.
