An Integrated Arrival and Departure Display for the Tower Controller

Jörg Bergner; Christina König; Thomas Hofmann; Hendrik Ebert

The current paper reports on the design of a human-machine-interface (HMI) for the local controller at a hub-airport. Considering the presently used systems for the arrival and departure information an integrated HMI was developed using a multidisciplinary approach combining operational, software, ergonomic, and product design expertise. To assure acceptability by the future users, operational controllers were involved right from the start. During the iterative and incremental design process the real-time simulation environment of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH, Langen was used to evaluate the design-steps of the HMI. The results of this study form the basis for a new HMI to be used in the new control tower which is under construction at Frankfurt Airport.

How to reduce workload - augmented reality to ease the work of air traffic controllers

Thomas Hofmann; Christina König; Ralph Bruder; Jörg Bergner

In the future the air traffic will rise--the workload of the controllers will do the same. In the BMWi research project, one of the tasks is, how to ensure safe air traffic, and a reasonable workload for the air traffic controllers. In this project it was the goal to find ways how to reduce the workload (and stress) for the controllers to allow safe air traffic, esp. at huge hub-airports by implementing augmented reality visualization and interaction.

DFS ConceptDesk—An Approach to an Intuitive UX for Air Traffic Control

Thomas Hofmann; Jörg Bergner; Robert Schnuell

In this ergonomic, experimental case study, the design and implementation of an experimental workplace for air traffic controllers (ATC) is described. It discusses how such a project in the development of new forms of interaction for highly complex and safety-critical HMI workspaces makes sense.
