This paper presents the results of a study that describes 351 dissertations and theses on the teaching of Biology in Brazil, showing some trends in these works, based in the following descriptors: author and advisor for the work; academic degree; institution of origin for the work; year of defense; geographical distribution; and sponsorship. The results are presented in such a way as to make explicit the data on the institutional base that supports this field of investigation and the trends in research on Teaching Biology in Brazil.

This paper aims at describing and analyzing the scientific production put forward in four Research Meetings about Environmental Education (EPEA) ran from 2001 to 2007. The 303 comprehensive works were studied on the following criteria: author; involved institution; educational level; knowledge area; thematic focus. The results show: a) strong inter-regional production imbalance, having the highest concentration in the Southeast-South region (83%); b) the authorship predominance from institutions promoting the Meetings - UNESP, USP and UFSCar; c) strong interest within formal school issues - 77%; d) predominance of researches which map and approach Citizens Characteristics and Conceptions - 33%, Theoretical and Curricular Foundation - 29%, Contents and Methods - 10%. The paper also presents important elements to reflect upon the research on Environmental Education and the potential of EPEAs for the development of this research field in the country.

EnglishThis article is a theoretical essay that provides thoughts on action research and its application in the field of educational research, with special attention to that produced in Science Education. It shows the multiple facets assumed by research studies linking action and research, and, furthermore, questions the vague and indiscriminate use of the term Action-Research. Based on a review of the literature, it presents a number of characteristics to define action-research projects, separating this modality from other possibilities. In addition, it proposes a matrix showing basic characteristics in order to more precisely define the different action-research modalities. The expectation is that this matrix will help students and young researchers, as well as more experienced researchers, in the theoretical-methodological classification of their research projects. portuguesO artigo e um ensaio teorico, estabelecendo reflexoes sobre as Pesquisas de Natureza Interventiva (PNI) e sua aplicacao no campo de pesquisa educacional, com especial atencao para aquelas produzidas na area de Educacao em Ciencias. Evidencia as multiplas facetas assumidas pelas investigacoes articuladoras de acao e pesquisa, e, mais que isso, problematiza o uso vago e indiscriminado do termo Pesquisa-Acao. Com base em revisao de literatura, apresenta uma serie de caracteristicas para definicao de projetos de pesquisa-acao, separando essa modalidade de outras possibilidades existentes entre as PNI. Adicionalmente, propomos uma matriz exibindo caracteristicas basicas para definirmos com mais precisao as diferentes modalidades de PNI. A ideia e que a referida matriz ajudara a trajetoria de estudantes, jovens pesquisadores e tambem pesquisadores mais experientes no enquadramento teorico-metodologico de seus projetos de investigacao.
