Abstract The Identity Theorem states that an analytic function (real or complex) on a connected domain is uniquely determined by its values on a sequence of distinct points that converge to a point of its domain. This result is not true in general in the real setting, if we relax the analytic hypothesis on the function to infinitely many times differentiable. In fact, we construct an algebra of functions A enjoying the following properties: (i) A is uncountably infinitely generated (that is, the cardinality of a minimal system of generators of A is uncountable); (ii) every nonzero element of A is nowhere analytic; (iii) A ⊂C∞ (ℝ); (iv) every element of A has infinitely many zeros in ℝ; and (v) for every f ε A 0 and n ε N, f(n) (the nth derivative of f) enjoys the same properties as the elements in A0 . This construction complements those made by Cater and by Kim and Kwon, and published in the American Mathematical Monthly in 1984 and 2000, respectively.

Mathematics is an important core of the syllabus of any Computer Science degree. We have studied the relation between the learning competence of Mathematics for first-years at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, and their success in the subjects of mathematics in the degree. Its relevance for their success in the whole first academic year is also reported.

If the set of monomorphisms between locally convex spaces is not empty, then it is an open subset of the space of all continuous and linear operators endowed with the topology of the uniform convergence on the bounded sets if and only if the domain space is normable. The corresponding characterization for the set of almost open operators is also obtained; it is related to the lifting of bounded sets and to the quasinormability of the domain space. Other properties and examples are analyzed.

In this work we show the impact of a mentoring program for freshmen set for the degrees taught at the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenierlia Informaitica of the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia. We analyze the variables that influence the student participation in the program, and we evaluate the impact that following up it has for an improvement of the academic performance of the students.

Related to the notion of derivative of a function, its application to function optimization is an interesting and illustrative problem for Engineering students. In the present work, we develop an application of the derivative concept to optimize the filtering of a colour image. This implies to optimize the value of the filter parameter to maximize performance. We propose to maximize the quality of the filtered image represented by the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), which is a function of the filter parameter. The optimal value for the parameter is obtained by means of an algorithm based on the approximation of the derivative of the PSNR function so that finally the optimum filtered image is obtained.
