OBJECTIVES To investigate the frequency of malignant oral and maxillofacial lesions among children and adolescents from representative geographic regions of Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study was conducted on biopsies obtained from 1990 to 2016 at six Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology referral centers. A total of 85,105 biopsy specimens from children and adolescents were analyzed. Gender, age, anatomical location, symptomatology and histopathological diagnosis were evaluated. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. RESULTS Fifty-eight (0.06%) malignant oral and maxillofacial lesions were diagnosed in children (19%) and adolescents (81%). The lesions were more frequent among females (60.3%) and adolescents. The most prevalent lesions were mucoepidermoid carcinomas (22.4%), osteosarcomas (13.8%), squamous cell carcinomas (12.1%), and Burkitts lymphomas (12.1%). The most commonly affected sites were the palate (19%), mandible (13.8%), and maxilla (13.8%). Almost half the patients were asymptomatic. CONCLUSION Pediatric oral and maxillofacial malignant lesions were infrequent and showed wide diversity, with a prevalence of mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Analysis of malignant lesions in children and adolescents helps pediatric dentists and oncologists to obtain a better understanding of such lesions and to reduce the time for diagnosis, with a consequent improvement of prognosis.

Objective. This paper aimed to analyze the in vitro industrialized fruit juices effect plus soy to establish the erosive potential of these solutions. Materials and Methods. Seventy bovine incisors were selected after being evaluated under stereomicroscope. Their crowns were prepared and randomly divided into 7 groups, using microhardness with allocation criteria. The crowns were submitted to the fruit juice plus soy during 15 days, twice a day. The pH values, acid titration, and Knoop microhardness were recorded and the specimens were evaluated using X-ray microfluorescence (µXRF). Results. The pH average for all juices and after 3 days was significantly below the critical value for dental erosion. In average, the pH value decreases 14% comparing initial time and pH after 3 days. Comparing before and after, there was a 49% microhardness decrease measured in groups (p < 0.05). Groups G1, G2, G5, and G6 are above this average. The analysis by μXRF showed a decrease of approximately 7% Ca and 4% P on bovine crowns surface. Florida (FL) statistical analysis showed a statistically significant 1 difference between groups. Thus, a tooth chance to suffer demineralization due to industrialized fruit juices plus soy is real.

Introduction: For a long time researchers have tried to find out a way to grow tissues back to the human body in order to solve transplantation problems by offering the unique opportunity to have their organs back, working properly, in search of life dignity. Literature Review: Stem cells seem to be present in many other tissues than researchers had once thought; and in some specific sites they can be easily collected, without the need of expensive interventions. The oral cavity is one of these regions where their collection can be accomplished, with plenty of accessible sites enriched with these precious cells. Aim: The aim of this literature review is to research where in the mouth can scientists find stem cells to be used in the near future. Key-message: The aim of this literature review is to research where stem cells can be found and collected in the oral cavity.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis is an unusual infection characterized by necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and fascial layers. Risk factors for the development of necrotizing fasciitis include diabetes mellitus, chronic renal disease, peripheral vascular disease, malnutrition, advanced age, obesity, alcohol abuse, intravenous drug use, surgery, and ischemic ulcers. This report presents a case of necrotizing fasciitis in the cervical area caused by dental extraction in a 73-year-old woman. Cervical necrotizing fasciitis in geriatric patient is rare, and even when establishing the diagnosis and having it timely treated, the patient can suffer irreversible damage or even death. Clinical manifestations in the head and neck usually have an acute onset characterized by severe pain, swelling, redness, erythema, presence of necrotic tissue, and in severe cases obstruction of the upper airways. Therefore, the presentation of this clinical case can serve as guidance to dentists as a precaution to maintain an aseptic chain and be aware of the clinical condition of older patients and the systemic conditions that may increase the risk of infections.

The aim of this study was to integrate the available data published on odontogenic carcinosarcoma into a comprehensive analysis of their features, treatment and recurrence. An electronic search with no publication date or language restriction was undertaken in March 2018 in the following databases: Medline Ovid, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and LILACS. Eligibility criteria included publications having enough clinical, imaginological and histopathological information to confirm a definite diagnosis of the neoplasm. Data were evaluated descriptively and statistically using the MedCalc software. The Kaplan-Meier method was used for survival analysis. The systematic review detected nine articles from eight countries. Six cases with no age predilection occurred in male individuals complaining of painful swelling in the posterior mandible. Radiographically, the lesions were large, with expansive radiolucency and with ill-defined borders and seven cases were associated with preexisting odontogenic lesions. Radical surgery was the treatment of choice in the majority of cases. Recurrences (n = 6), metastasis (n = 4) and death (n = 4) were frequently observed in many cases. Odontogenic carcinosarcoma is a very aggressive neoplasm with a poor prognosis. This study provides knowledge that could help surgeons, oncologists, otorhinolaryngologists and oral maxillofacial pathologists with the diagnosis and management of these lesions.

OBJECTIVES To analyse the occurrence of calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumours (CEOT) based on biopsy records from different Brazilian geographic regions and to contrast the data with a review of the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 2-step study was conducted. Step 1 consisted of a collaborative study of biopsies obtained from 1953 to 2017 at six Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology centres. Evaluation of 86,268 biopsy records was performed. Demographic and histopathological diagnosis data were assessed. In Step 2, a review of the literature of case reports and cases series of CEOT identified across five electronic databases was conducted. RESULTS In the collaborative study, 32 cases of CEOT were evaluated. This figure represented 0.03% of the oral and maxillofacial lesions and 1.7% of all odontogenic tumours across the centres. Women in the fourth decade of life were more affected. CEOT occurred more in the mandible than in the maxilla (ratio 1.9:1). The review of the literature showed that Asian individuals were more affected by this neoplasm. CONCLUSIONS Useful knowledge on the epidemiology, treatment and follow-up of CEOT has been provided. Demographic data and clinical features of the cases presented in this collaborative study were quite similar to those of studies reported worldwide.

This article describes a simple method for painting an artificial iris for the manufacturing of an ocular prosthesis with dark and light tones, both with excellent esthetic results. The challenge of choosing colors around the pupil and medium zone during painting is aided by the application of Newtons color wheel theory. This technique provides a safer choice of color during the painting procedure by using a mixture of ceramic pigments.

The facial masks commercially available for noninvasive positive pressure ventilation therapy for children with clinical conditions of hypoventilation are limited by size and hardness. The present report describes a straightforward method of developing a nasal mask from a room-temperature vulcanizing silicone elastomer for daily contact with the nasal mucosa of babies during noninvasive positive pressure ventilation. The fabrication of the silicone mask with nasal tubes is based on maxillofacial prosthesis techniques, with retention with steel prongs and elastics.

PURPOSE The aim of the present report is to describe 50 cases in the literature of mandibular arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in which embolization was the primary treatment and to discuss details such as age, gender, materials used, outcome of embolization, time of follow-up, and intra- or postprocedure complications. An illustrative case in which reossification was noticed after embolization also is presented. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study was carried out in 2 steps. In the first, an electronic search without time restriction for embolization as the primary treatment for mandibular AVMs was performed on Medline through PubMed. In the second, the case of a patient with mandibular AVM and massive oral bleeding episodes is described after a long-term follow-up. RESULTS Clinical stability with the cessation of oral bleeding episodes was detected in 25 cases and 2 cases were planned for another embolization session. Clinical stability and reossification were detected in 23 of the 50 cases included. Complications were reported in 50% of cases, but most were minor and transient. CONCLUSION Currently, owing to more sophisticated imaging techniques, the diagnosis of mandibular AVMs is quicker and new, less invasive techniques that avoid surgical resection have proved effective. It should be emphasized that these techniques are not without complications and that long-term monitoring is extremely important.
