Environmental Strategies in Spanish Hotels: Contextual Factors and Performance

Eva Carmona-Moreno; José Céspedes-Lorente; Jerónimo de Burgos-Jiménez

This article is a study of the environmental strategies adopted in the service industry and their impact on a firms performance. More specifically, we define the environmental strategies of 268 Spanish hotels, based on their environmental protection activities and the use of these as an argument for competition. They have been categorised into four groups. We observed the difference between each of these environmental strategies as regards certain contextual variables and performance. Our findings suggest that firms in the groups with more developed environmental strategies are associated with a higher level of environmental performance but not necessarily with economic performance.

Planning and control of environmental performance in hotels.

Jerónimo de Burgos-Jiménez; Carlos Jesús Cano-Guillén; José Céspedes-Lorente

This article approaches the concept of environmental performance in hotels as a premise to laying down a foundation for its planning and control as a strategic objective of the company. In this way, a differentiation is made between the concepts of environmental management and performance. We concentrate on the latter. Likewise, the various options that can be used to measure environmental performance are analysed, along with the dimensions that should be considered in its evaluation. Subsequently, certain ways of measuring and evaluating hotel environmental performance are suggested, along with considerations and limitations that should be taken into account in this area. Finally, we explain how environmental performance in hotels can contribute to providing them with a sustainable competitive advantage.

Being Green Against the Wind? The Moderating Effect of Munificence on Acquiring Environmental Competitive Advantages

Javier Martínez-del-Río; Raquel Antolin-Lopez; José Céspedes-Lorente

We analyze the effect of munificence on the development of a proactive environmental strategy (PES) and firm performance. In addition, we examine the moderating role of perceived munificence on the association between innovation capabilities and PES and between PES and firm performance. These relationships are tested in a sample consisting in 263 Spanish agricultural firms operating in three different geographical clusters. Our results broadly support our hypotheses and suggest that although perceived munificence favors the development of a PES, it is in hostile environments where PES generates competitive advantages.

Feasibility Study for a Motorway of the Sea (MoS) between Spain and France: Application to the Transportation of Perishable Cargo

Juan C. Pérez-Mesa; José Céspedes-Lorente; José Antonio Salinas Andújar

Abstract This paper studies the possibility of increasing shipping of fruit and vegetables from Almería (southeast of Spain) to Port Vendres‐Perpignan (southeast of France). Almería is one of the areas of vegetables production largest in the world and Perpignan is one of the most important customers of Almería. After analysing the potential volume of shipping, we estimate a mode choice model which allows us to study the sensitivity of final clients (horticultural operators) to future change in the variables which condition the choice between transport by sea or by land. This will also help us to calculate the market share of each system as a function of foreseeable change in the variables.

How Organizational Structure Affects Ecological Responsiveness

Miguel Perez-Valls; José Céspedes-Lorente; Javier Martínez-del-Río; Raquel Antolin-Lopez

In this article, we analyze the relationship between the main dimensions of organizational structure (i.e., formalization, centralization, and complexity) and ecological responsiveness in a sample of 109 firms in the European air passenger transport industry. Broadly confirming our hypotheses, the results show that high formalization of routine tasks favors ecological responsiveness. Structures characterized by high decentralization and low complexity also favor ecological responsiveness. Furthermore, decentralization has a significant, positive relationship with ecological responsiveness among firms with low vertical complexity. Overall, the results indicate that organizational structure plays a major role in ecological responsiveness.

Going Green by Exporting

Emilio Galdeano-Gómez; Eva Carmona-Moreno; José Céspedes-Lorente

The focus of this chapter is on the relationship between environmental performance and exports at country or industry level. The aim is to provide an analysis of these relationships at the firm level. Can environmental performance explain differences in export intensity between firms? Does a firm’s environmental performance improve as its export activity improves? The approach followed is a composite equation model in which export intensity and productivity components, including environmental productivity, are jointly determined, taking as reference the exporting firms of the agro-food industry in southeast Spain.
