Being Green Against the Wind? The Moderating Effect of Munificence on Acquiring Environmental Competitive Advantages

Javier Martínez-del-Río; Raquel Antolin-Lopez; José Céspedes-Lorente

We analyze the effect of munificence on the development of a proactive environmental strategy (PES) and firm performance. In addition, we examine the moderating role of perceived munificence on the association between innovation capabilities and PES and between PES and firm performance. These relationships are tested in a sample consisting in 263 Spanish agricultural firms operating in three different geographical clusters. Our results broadly support our hypotheses and suggest that although perceived munificence favors the development of a PES, it is in hostile environments where PES generates competitive advantages.

Learning in Higher Education: The Role of Sustainability Integration Strategies, Legitimacy, and Teaching Tools

Raquel Antolin-Lopez; Nieves García-de-Frutos

This study addresses a research gap in the literature by exploring how the extent and process of integrating sustainability training within business education at university level can affect students’ attitudes to learning about it. Specifically, the chapter discusses the perceived importance of educating for sustainability in the business world, and the effects of its inclusion within various academic disciplines. Discussion includes the role of instructors and teaching tools, and their impact on students’ willingness to learn (WTL). These relationships were tested with a sample of 320 students enrolled in different undergraduate and master-level degrees of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Almeria (Spain). The findings provide insights on how to engage students more effectively in business sustainability learning. Teaching might be ineffective if instructors cannot understand, and thus help shape, students’ personal attitudes towards sustainability learning. Therefore, curricula and classes should be designed to teach it more effectively.

How Organizational Structure Affects Ecological Responsiveness

Miguel Perez-Valls; José Céspedes-Lorente; Javier Martínez-del-Río; Raquel Antolin-Lopez

In this article, we analyze the relationship between the main dimensions of organizational structure (i.e., formalization, centralization, and complexity) and ecological responsiveness in a sample of 109 firms in the European air passenger transport industry. Broadly confirming our hypotheses, the results show that high formalization of routine tasks favors ecological responsiveness. Structures characterized by high decentralization and low complexity also favor ecological responsiveness. Furthermore, decentralization has a significant, positive relationship with ecological responsiveness among firms with low vertical complexity. Overall, the results indicate that organizational structure plays a major role in ecological responsiveness.
