OBJECTIVE: This study described the active teaching-learning validation methods of health education that promote healthy eating habits in elementary schoolchildren. METHODS: A validation study of four educational methods was done. They included assessment dynamics, movie minute, theater moment and sensory box. The study was done in 2009 with 25 children aged 5 to 7 years attending a private school in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceara. They were deliberately chosen to participate in teaching-learning workshops. The project was done by students from the local nursing school and approved by the local Research Ethics Committee. The childrens parents or caregivers signed a free and informed consent form. RESULTS: The methods were validated. In the assessment dynamics, 84% of the students placed the foods correctly, showing that they learned to distinguish healthy from unhealthy foods by interacting with the communication media and from family nutrition education and child socialization. In the movie minute activity, the children demonstrated interest in learning about the value of the studied foods. There was efficient interaction between the children and researchers during the theater moment. All children identified the foods hidden in the sensory box based on their texture and consistency, which helped to improve their cognitive skills. It was difficult for the parents and school to provide healthy foods. CONCLUSION: The used methods helped the students to develop their competences on health promotion. In caring for children, food is critical for good health, since nurturing is more than just a biological act.

With the aim of contributing to the current curricular transformation of Brazilian Dentistry courses, this study describes the training of dental surgeons considering the needs of the public Unified Health System (SUS – Sistema Unico de Saude). We focus on the health care model currently in force and emphasize the idea that so as to attain the principles of this model, a shift in the training of instructors who lecture in Dentistry should occur. Some aspects of the training of such instructors, together with the implementation of the National Curricular Guidelines in Dentistry courses, are discussed, and the professional profiles of graduates from Brazilian dental schools are analyzed. We conclude our work by considering some elements that should be observed in order to improve the training process so that it will lead to the training of dental surgeons able to act within a new perspective, that of health promotion

Objective: To argue upon the social hole of Dentistry in health promotion. Data Synthesis: It is necessary to understand health promotion as a process by which people and communities are enabled to analyze and to reflect over their real problems for, only then, think strategies for overcoming such difficulties. As oral diseases are direct products of the social insertion of affected people/communities, the dentist can greatly contribute to the increase in the quality of life of these groups. What is observed in the dentist professional acting is the unfamiliarity on how to make health strictu sensu. Therein, academic changes in graduation courses are proposed, in which subjects directed to the social aspects of the profession may be adequately explored. It is understood that such alterations may be reflected in health services practice, contributing for the conceptual change of hegemonic attention model. Final considerations: Dentistry has a relevant social role, as it can contribute, beyond clinical procedures in the oral cavity, for the real increment of people/communities quality of life.
