This scientific studies discusses the current trends of teaching at universities, as seen by domestic and foreign professional public. The article also presents an analysis of further professional training of university teachers in selected European countries. Due to new demands and pressures on universities to increase their quality, rising demands on pedagogical competence of university teachers. The education of the academic staff has its foundation and inspiration to him and we look abroad, but it cannot just assume disregarding Czech specific conditions.

Abstract The comparative study defines the terms electronic learning environment and smart learning environment with their components and contribution to university education. Moreover, it introduces identified trends that are expected to emerge in the next five years. The research on a representative sample of the University of Ostrava students and the University of Silesia students, which was carried out within the scope of the 7th RP IRNet project, was aimed at how the individual components of the electronic learning environment can be used, the reasons for their use and the related needs of students.
