Hitting the right target: an examination of inflation targeting and labour within the varieties of capitalism framework

Joseph J. St. Marie

This study examines the interaction of state and social institutions, namely labour unions. Examining the type of capitalist structure of the state, one can draw conclusions about institutional arrangements and economic structures. The literature on Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) and inflation targeting are numerous; a synthesis takes into account economic and social structures including interactions with monetary policy. Multivariate models test the assumption of differences between inflation targeters and non-targeters. Models demonstrate state intervention in labour markets and union activities. The study concludes by presenting findings about relationships between the capitalist structure of the state, social institutions and inflation targeting.

Global shift: Is there a link between economic growth and globalisation?

Joseph J. St. Marie; Shahdad Naghshpour; Samuel S. Stanton

Have nations embraced globalisation and integrated themselves into the international financial and trading system? We seek to untangle the puzzle of emerging economy dynamics and globalisation, thus, we test the integration/globalisation thesis. We engage the globalisation literature by testing common assumptions regarding the breadth and depth of globalisation in emerging economies with a rigorous large-N empirical model. Further, we engage the developmental literature by investigating important aspects of trade flows and economic openness. This study contributes to the extant literature on globalisation and economic development by uncovering important links between globalisation, economic development and trade.
