Objective: To investigate the association between depression and quality of life in young adults aged 18 to 24 years. Method: This cross-sectional, population-based study included 1,560 young adults aged 18 to 24 years living in the urban area of Pelotas, southern Brazil. Sample selection was based on cluster sampling: of a total of 448 sectors, 97 were randomly selected. Depression was assessed using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), and quality of life was measured using the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form General Health Survey (SF-36), both validated for use in Brazilian Portuguese. Results: The prevalence of depression was 12.6%. Mean scores obtained for quality of life in the eight domains assessed by SF-36 were lower in depressive young adults, reaching statistical significance in all domains when assessed using the t test (p = 0.000). Conclusion: Young adults with signs and symptoms suggestive of depression presented lower levels of quality of life based on the domains assessed.

This is an integrative literature review, whose objective was to identify in the academic productions the implication of the work environment on the development of the work process of the nursing team. The bibliographic survey was conducted online in the Virtual Health Library, and found sixteen scientific productions, of which six were selected. The analysis of the articles led to the identification of two themes: the working conditions of nursing and who assists the caregiver? From the study, it can be identified that some working conditions affect negatively the effectiveness of the actions of the labor process and health of nurses. Moreover, it is noted a paradox, the caregiver does not know how assists the customer-colleague, nor of himself. Therefore, it is suggested to the nurses that encourage health promotion strategies of the nursery personnel, to ensure a healthy work environment.

Daiani Modernel Xavier; Juliane Portella Ribeiro; Marina Soares Mota; Simone Quadros Alvarez

OBJECTIVES To know the effects for the newborn of the use of crack in pregnancy. METHODS This is a qualitative study conducted in a university hospital in southern Brazil, in the first half of 2014. Fifteen mothers crack users and five grandparents participated. The data were produced through semi-structured interviews and later submitted to content analysis. RESULTS It was found that the use of crack in pregnancy leads to repercussions related to the health of the newborn and repercussions related to family restructuring. In relation to the newborn, prematurity, congenital malformation, hospitalization in an intensive care unit, use of care and feeding technologies through artificial milk formulas were mentioned. In the family context, it was evidenced the occurrence of abandonment of the child by the mother, causing the adoption of the newborn by relatives of the family nucleus or their institutionalization due to lack of family structure. CONCLUSIONS It was found that the use of crack in pregnancy leads to repercussions related to the health of the newborn and repercussions related to family restructuring. In this sense, the recruitment of pregnant users of crack by health/nursing professionals and referral for high-risk prenatal care, as well as early identification of the peculiarities of the newborns of these women, and the development of actions that minimize the repercussions of crack are imperative.
