From theories to actions: a proposal for a new course on enterprise information systems integration

Kimfong Lei; Julie R. Mariga; Benjamin R. Pobanz

This paper presents a proposal for a new senior/gradates level courses concentrating on enterprise information systems/applications integration. The course will include introduction to different enterprise integration models and enterprise systems architectures, current and upcoming trends of technology, and design and implementation strategy. In addition to traditional class lectures, techniques such as problem-based learning (PBL) and case method are the essential approaches to delivery the course effectively. Emphasis is upon active rather than passive learning.

A Wireless Networking Curriculum Model for Network Engineering Technology Programs

Raymond A. Hansen; Anthony Smith; Julie R. Mariga

Wireless networking is experiencing explosive growth, both in market size and the number of new standards and technologies. Effectively educating students, both at the undergraduate and graduate level, with the abilities to evaluate, implement, and integrate wireless networks should be a key part of any information technology (IT) education program for the foreseeable future. The Computer & Information Technology Department (CIT) at Purdue University is in a unique position to fulfill this educational need through its wireless networking curriculum. This curriculum currently offers three courses within the network engineering technology program, covering topics from 802.11 networking to 3G cellular, wireless network security and manage-ment to WWAN technologies. Each course includes trend analysis of wireless networking in order to effectively prepare students for employment in this area. This paper discusses the existing wireless networking curriculum by providing a brief perspective of previous course content and detailing each current course in the areas of prerequisite knowledge, intended audience, course content, and lecture/laboratory integration.

Increasing the IT Knowledge of Indiana High Schools

Julie R. Mariga

The purpose of this project is focused on enhancing the information technology knowledge and skills of Indiana high school teachers and their students in the biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, and technology education disciplines. More specifically, this project focuses on information technology knowledge and skills in two areas critical to the Indiana economy: advanced manufacturing and biotechnology. Finally, this project focuses on basic IT knowledge and skills common and prerequisite to both of the specialty areas with a unique emphasis on information security, a specialized area that is becoming increasingly more important.

A program to reduce the number of open I/T jobs at Purdue University: an industry case study

Julie R. Mariga

The number of unfilled information technology (IT) positions in demand in the United States is estimated at 1.6 million this year. The demand for skilled IT people far exceeds the supply and it is estimated that half of the 1.6 million positions will likely remain vacant. Due to the shortage of skilled I/T professionals, companies and universities have to be creative and develop in-house programs that will allow them to produce their own IT professionals from among a pool of employees working in non-technical areas or possessing non-technical degrees. Purdue University has developed such a program that will help fill open computing positions by providing people with a solid educational foundation as well as current technical skills. This paper discusses the program Purdue has put into place to help overcome its shortage of qualified I/T professionals.
