Chemical composition of skeletal muscle

Abrão Anghihan; Francisco B. De Jorge; Julinho Aisen

The present paper aims to presents standard values for the contents of water, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper and iron in muscles (tibialis anterior, deltoid and pectoralis major) in individuals without any neurological conditions. This study shall constitute the basis for the interpretation of other data, still being gathered, relating these normal values with those obtained for muscles under pathological conditions.

Meningeoma associado a aneurisma relato de um caso

Claudio S. de Mello Simões; Paulo Eduardo Riff; Julinho Aisen

The case of a patient with aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery and meningioma of the olfactory glove is reported. She was operated, and both pathologies treated through the same surgical approach with good results.

L. M. Singer Vermes; Rubens Guimarães Ferri; Julinho Aisen; J. M. Marlet

The total protein content of CSF collected from the cisterna magna (cisternal fluid) of 98 patients (58 males and 40 females) with no neurological diseases was determined by the colorimetric method devised by Lowry and co-workers. This method has been previously chosen based mainly on its sensitivity, accuracy and low fluid consumption. The CSF samples were normal with regard to pressure, color, citology and its content in glucose, chloride and urea. Complement fixation tests for syphilis and cisticercosis, as well as the globulin tests (Pandy, Nonne — Appelt and Takata-Ara) were negative. The average value and the normal range of cisternal fluid total protein was calculated for the mixed population (males and females). The mean protein value was 26.78 mg/100 ml, the lower and upper limits were respectively 13.20 and 40.36 mg/100 ml. These data are higher than those stated in some publications, and factors that could interfere in the different results mentioned in the literature are briefly discussed. Since the statistical analysis of the results showed that the mean total protein concentration in males (28.76 mg/100 ml) was higher than in females (23.91 mg/100 ml), normal limits for each sex were established: 16.96 to 47.13 mg/100 ml for males and 14.76 to 42.76 mg/100 ml for females. The total protein content of CSF collected from the cisterna magna (cisternal fluid) of 98 patients (58 males and 40 females) with no neurological diseases was determined by the colorimetric method devised by Lowry and co-workers. Tumores da região pineal: considerações sobre 12 casos

Rolando A. Tenuto; Horacio M. Canelas; José Zaclis; Julinho Aisen; Waldir A. Tognola

Twelve cases of tumours of the pineal region were analysed under the clinical, laboratorial and radiological viewpoints. In 6 cases the diagnosis was based only on the clinical and radiological (particularly ventriculogramortem examination. The survival from 3 to 9 years, in 4 cases submitted to the conservative treatment including intra or extracranial shunts follow by cobalto-therapy, supports the indication of the procedure adopted.

Anterior floor meningoencephaloceles surgical treatment: experience based on eleven cases

Julinho Aisen; Walter C. Pereira; Almir Ferreira de Andrade; Jorge M. Psilakis

The authors relate their experience in the anterior floor meningoencephaloceles surgical treatment, excised by the intracranial pathway and extradural approach. They compare their results on five cases operated according to this technique, with other six cases treated in the same Department using other surgical procedures and with those in the literature.

Biochemistry of the normal dura mater of the human brain determination of water, sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, sulfur and nitrogen contents

Horacio M. Canelas; Julinho Aisen; Francisco B. De Jorge; Abrão Anghinah

The concentrations of water, sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, sulfur, and nitrogen were determined in samples of apparently normal dura mater removed from 18 subjects recently dead by craniocerebral trauma. The average concentrations expressed in dry weight were: water 79.55 g/100 g ± 2.52; sodium 1.63 mequiv/100 g ±0.27; potassium 3.68 mequiv/100 g ± 0.66; calcium 119.84 mg/100 g ± 107.40; phosphorus 68.2 mg/100 g ± 34.5; magnesium 0.61 mequiv/100 g ± 0.37; copper 249.8 /xg/100 g ± 109.4; iron 0.82 mg/100 g ± 0.28; sulfur 490.7 mg/100 g ± 22.5; nitrogen 3.33 g/100 g ± 0.17.

Marcos Gambetta Bueno; Paulo Eduardo Riff; Kallil E. Nassar; Julinho Aisen

A case of carotid-basilar anastomose with persistence of the primitive hypoglossal artery is reported. The authors related aspects of intracranial aneurysm. Anatomical, embryological, physiopathological and angiographical aspects are discussed.A case of carotid-basilar anastomose with persistence of the primitive hypoglossal artery is reported. Neurolues congênita associada a hidrocefalia

Julinho Aisen; Almir Ferreira de Andrade; Walter C. Pereira; L. C. Mattosinho França

A case of meningovascular and parenchymatous neurosyphilis associated with a non-communicating hydrocephalus is reported. The syphilitic nature of the disease was confirmed by laboratory and histopathological findings. The authors were unable to find in the medical literature other reports of histologically documented cases of hydrocephalus secondary to a block of the ventricular system determined by neurosyphilis.

Cistos aracnóideos temporais: relato de dois casos operados

Gilberto Machado de Almeida; Julinho Aisen

Two cases of patients with frontotemporal bulging caused by temporal arachnoidal cysts are reported. The cases were seen with a interval of only one month. The signs and symptoms of intracranial hypertension subsided after the surgical procedure in the two patients. In those cases the etiology of the process lies probably in congenital malformations caused by incomplete canalization of the subarachnoidal space.

Tratamento dos meduloblastomas do cerebelo

Walter C. Pereira; Rolando A. Tenuto; Julinho Aisen; José Luzio; Vivaldino P. Franciosi
