Chemical studies of bronchial sputum by Werner ( 1953 ) , Springer et al. (1954) , Baer (1955) , Bttkantz & Berns (1958) demonstrated the presence of hexosamin, N-acetilhexosamin, uronic and sialic acid, fucose and mucopolysaccharides which exhibit blood group activity. Immunological relationship between bronchial sputum and other human secretions and organ antigens was demonstrated by Mendes et al. (1961), suggesting chemical relations among some components from different sources. The present report is concerned with the results obtained by gel double diffusion and immoelectrophoresis for the identification of protein components of bronchial sputum and their relationship with sertim proteins.

Abstract 1. 1. The blood sera of fifteen normal she-asses were analysed by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate (Cellogel). 2. 2. Nine (60 per cent) animals exhibited a gamma G(T)-like globulin, in spite of not having any strong stimulus of the reticuloendothelial system. 3. 3. The gamma G(T)-like globulin persisted during pregnancy and in the post-partum period. 4. 4. Measurement of the gamma G(T)like globulin carried out by cellulose acetate (CAF) electrophoresis before pregnancy, several times during pregnancy and in the post-partum period showed mean values that were statistically similar.

The total protein content of CSF collected from the cisterna magna (cisternal fluid) of 98 patients (58 males and 40 females) with no neurological diseases was determined by the colorimetric method devised by Lowry and co-workers. This method has been previously chosen based mainly on its sensitivity, accuracy and low fluid consumption. The CSF samples were normal with regard to pressure, color, citology and its content in glucose, chloride and urea. Complement fixation tests for syphilis and cisticercosis, as well as the globulin tests (Pandy, Nonne — Appelt and Takata-Ara) were negative. The average value and the normal range of cisternal fluid total protein was calculated for the mixed population (males and females). The mean protein value was 26.78 mg/100 ml, the lower and upper limits were respectively 13.20 and 40.36 mg/100 ml. These data are higher than those stated in some publications, and factors that could interfere in the different results mentioned in the literature are briefly discussed. Since the statistical analysis of the results showed that the mean total protein concentration in males (28.76 mg/100 ml) was higher than in females (23.91 mg/100 ml), normal limits for each sex were established: 16.96 to 47.13 mg/100 ml for males and 14.76 to 42.76 mg/100 ml for females. The total protein content of CSF collected from the cisterna magna (cisternal fluid) of 98 patients (58 males and 40 females) with no neurological diseases was determined by the colorimetric method devised by Lowry and co-workers. Abstract We studied forty-four samples of sera from asthmatic patients and thirty-eight from nonasthmatic persons, employing filter paper electrophoresis by the method of Grassmann and Hannig. An abnormal distribution of the protein in fractions was found. An extra component migrating between the beta and gamma globulins was also found in about 50 per cent of the asthma cases, which were divided into three groups—allergic, infections, and mixed as based upon laboratory and clinical data. The statistical analysis of the average values for each protein fraction revealed decrease in albumin, increase in alpha 2 and gamma globulins, and no significant difference between the average values of beta and alpha 1 globulins.

The protein metabolism in four cases of hereditary sensory radicular neuropathy was studied through the electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis of the blood serum. A slight increase of the gammaglobulin content was found in all cases. The immunoelectrophoresis showed an absense of IgA in a case, a slight increase of IgG in all cases, and an absence of IgM in two cases and a marked decrease of this macroglobulin in two cases of the disease and in their healthy parents. Only two patients showed an increase of beta1 lipoprotein.
