This article aims to understand the meaning of the process of dying with dignity in an intensive care unit from the perception of nurses. A qualitative study was performed with 12 nurses of the lato sensu nursing specialization course in adult, pediatric and neonatal ICUs of the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, through the discourse analysis approach proposed by Laurence Bardin. An interview was used as the research instrument. Following discourse analysis, five categories emerged as discussed throughout the article. It was concluded that, in the perception of the nurses, orthothanasia is a practice that respects human dignity through a dignified death. Additionally, it is surrounded by bioethical principles that allow the suspension of curative measures, providing space for palliative care as a mechanism for reducing the suffering and pain of patients in the terminal phase.

This study aimed to understand the meaning assigned by a group of nursing professors on orthotanasia. This is a qualitative study with a phenomenological perspective. The study included five nurses from a private university of Minas Gerais State. Four categories emerged: Unpreparedness team in situations that refer to human finitude; Confronting the family in the process of finitude; Extension of human suffering in intensive care units; the perspective of palliative care in intensive care units. It may be concluded that reflections on the finality has been increasing but are still insufficient in contemplating the practice of professional nursing. It is observed that the difficulty in dealing with death is a common problem for health professionals. ABSTRACT Objective: understanding the process of death and dying in hospitals in the perception of undergraduate nursing students. Methodology: this is about a qualitative study, from phenomenological approach, performed of seven nursing students at the University Jose Rosario Vellano. The research project has been approved by the Ethics Committee in Research of the University Jose Rosario Vellano (protocol number 76/2009). Results: through the interviews was enabled the construction of five categories: 1) Thinking about death, experiencing anxiety, 2) Professionalism in the view of academics and involvement with the cases, 3) The psychological impact at the time of loss and 4) The importance of family care of the patient; 5) Understanding the need to discuss death in academic education. Conclusion: the results showed that the students feel unprepared to deal with death, demonstrating a degree of anxiety, insecurity to talk about it, this is because the discussion of this issue is not frequent in the graduation, we believe that the creation of spaces for self-knowledge, awareness and reflection on the theme of death in the universities, would allow the training of professionals not only able to watch life for the rehabilitation or cure, but also prepared to deal with death. D escriptors: death; right to die ; education; nursing.
