Analysis of the parameters that effects the operating frequencies and bandwidth of a CPW-fed patch antenna

Birkan Dagdeviren; Kamil Yavuz Kapusuz; Sultan Can; Elif Aydin

In this study, the analysis of the effect of antenna parameters to the operating frequency is performed in a coplanar waveguide fed patch antenna. The effect of the size and the substrate of the design dual frequency antenna to the operating frequency and bandwidth are also evaluated. Bandwidth of the upper and lower frequency is also investigated and results are demonstrated. The method to increase the bandwidth is also presented by using the chosen parameters.

An industry sponsored undergraduate research (UR) experience: Preliminary study on fulfillment of program outcomes and industry requirements

Kamil Yavuz Kapusuz; Ali Kara

This study presents educational results of an industry sponsored undergraduate research (UR) project. The aim of the study is to show how such project works contribute to students in acquiring qualifications or skills necessary by the industry, and abilities regarding with program outcomes of accreditation organisations. The study is based on quantitative (surveys) and qualitative (self descriptions) data collected from senior students who worked in 9 months UR project sponsored by a company in Radio frequency (RF) and Communications domain. The preliminary results showed that an industry sponsored undergraduate research project may serve to both short term (industry requirements) and longer term (program outcomes) expectations in undergraduate curriculum of engineering departments.

Reader antenna design for RFID applications

G. Kaynakoz; N. K. Kilic; Kamil Yavuz Kapusuz; Sultan Can; Elif Aydin

In this paper, a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed microstrip patch antenna is designed on finite element method based simulation program and fabricated in order to use reader antenna in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The results of the simulations and the produced antennas are presented in the study. The produced microstrip patch antenna has a 105MHz bandwidth and operates in between 895-1000 MHz .

An equivalent-circuit model of miniaturized split-ring resonator

Sultan Can; Asim Egemen Yilmaz; Kamil Yavuz Kapusuz

In this paper, we present a new miniaturized split-ring resonator (SRR) to be easily employed in the practical realization of SRRs and derive its equivalent circuit model to accurately predict the resonance frequency. The results of the resonance frequency obtained by the developed equivalent circuit model are in very good agreement with the simulated results.

Non-uniformly spaced planarphased array antenna for Ku-band mobile direct broadcasting satellite reception systems

Levent Sahin; Erdem Ozyurt; Kamil Yavuz Kapusuz; Simsek Demir; Yakup Sen; Ugur Oguz

SATCOM on the move with electrical beam scanning capabilities has found great interest recently due to its low profile and low maintenance cost for both civilian and military applications. Uniformly distributed array elements have been widely used for phased array antennas. However, a growing number of research on non-uniform distributed array has been published. In contrast to uniformly distributed elements, non-uniformly distributed phased arrays provide the designer with a degree of freedom of additional element spacing through their wide-angle scanning property that mitigates mutual coupling between antenna elements and allows placement of microwave circuits beneath the antenna elements. This paper presents the design of a non-uniformly spaced dual-linearly polarized phased array antenna with a wide-angle scanning feature for Ku-band mobile direct broadcasting satellite reception systems. The proposed array is formed using 64 multilayer microstrip antenna elements. This array structure could be a promising candidate for future low-cost microwave and millimeter-wave applications in the mobile satellite communications systems not only for military use but also for civilian applications.

A modular FMCW radar RF front end design: Simulation and implementation

Birkan Dagdeviren; Kamil Yavuz Kapusuz; Ali Kara

In this work, simulations and preliminary measurement results of an S-band FMCW radar is presented. A commercial simulation tool (AWR-VSS) has been used at system level design stage of the radar. The simulation tool provides all functions regarding with transmitter, target and receiving blocks, and it finally feeds echo signals to the digital processing block implemented in MATLAB. The target range and velocity have been derived for simple target scenario in MATLAB. Then, a modular RF front end of the radar has been designed using commercial of the shelf (COTS) components. The radar system has been proved to be working in indoor environment using measurement equipment. Moreover, design of horn antennas for transmitting and reception blocks have been demonstrated. Real time signal processing functions will be developed at the next stage.
