DBLearn: Adaptive e-learning for practical database course — An integrated architecture approach

Srinual Nalintippayawong; Kanokwan Atchariyachanvanich; Thanakrit Julavanich

In this paper, an integrated architecture approach in designing and developing a DBLearn web-based application is presented. The DBLearn system is a personalized and adaptive e-learning system designed especially for learning practices in database courses. This approach focused on topics that are important but difficult for new learners, such as database design and structured query language (SQL) command query. The concept of adaptive e-learning and autonomous agents were applied in this system to eliminate the traditional constraints of effective e-learning, such as the problem of different learning sensory and knowledge levels. Four approaches were used to solve this problem. First, learning style theory was used to classify the way of learning for each student. Second, the student activity (historical data) is kept in the system to analyze the next knowledge the student should learn or review. Next, the SQL query automated grader was used to judge the correctness of the students query. This grader supports all the necessary commands in both DML and DDL. Finally, the SQL query question generator module that can generate SQL query questions automatically is presented. This will reduce the instructors work load in creating enough questions and allow the students to practice at their own pace as much as they want. By using these four techniques, the students will have a better learning experience and becoming more successful in learning outcomes.

Development of a MySQL Sandbox for processing SQL statements: Case of DML and DDL statements

Kanokwan Atchariyachanvanich; Srinual Nalintippayawong; Tanasab Permpool

This research developed the MySQL Sandbox, a secured environment for processing SQL queries. It was implemented as a RESTful web service having three services - sandbox database creation, SQL statement processing and sandbox database resetting. It supports the simultaneous processing of multiple SQL statements from multiple users in multiple databases. It uses question identification (ID) and student ID to create separate databases for each student using the MySQL feature to manage the users privileges of their own database. Every service returns a result in the JSON format, which is easy to understand. This MySQL Sandbox is the first tool to support judging DDL statements and complex DML statements. Existing SQL grading systems have limitations on the number of supported SQL statements because they are concerned about risks from some sensitive SQL statement, such as DDL and DML statements, other than the SELECT statement. This sandbox will help eliminate the security concerns that obstruct the development and improvement of SQL grading systems, while providing a greater freedom of learning query to students, which will help them improve their own skills in three dimensions i.e., database query, database administration and database programming.

Factors affecting disclosure of personal health information via mobile application

Kanokwan Atchariyachanvanich; Nichaporn Mitinunwong; Butsaraporn Tamthong

This study explored the factors that affect personal health information (PHI) disclosure via a mobile application (app) in Thailand. Since mobile apps are increasingly popular, as is the Thai peoples concern on their health condition, many mobile app service providers want to know which factors would persuade customers to reveal their PHI via mobile apps. This research model was, therefore, developed and included the six factors of: personalized service, self-presentation, mobile app reputation, familiarity, perceived benefits and privacy concerns. The hypotheses were tested by structural equation modeling using the questionnaire responses from 252 valid subjects. Surprisingly, privacy concern was not significantly negatively related to the intention to disclose PHI. However, the significance effect of the perceived benefit, personalized service and self-presentation were consistent with previous studies. The implication of the result will shed light on the development of healthcare mobile apps.

IT management status in public higher education institutions in Thailand

Srinual Nalintippayawong; Kanokwan Atchariyachanvanich

Thai public higher education institutions have adopted information technology (IT) to some extent for many years. While IT adoption is an important strategy to make any organization competitive against others, there has been very little research on IT management issues and the depth of use of IT across Thai public higher education institutions. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the status of information system adoption in public higher education institutions in Thailand, and to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the adoption of IT. A questionnaire survey was sent to chief information officers (CIOs) or equivalent position of 81 target Thai public higher education institutions. The 63 valid responses (77.8%) received were analyzed by qualitative content analysis and descriptive statistics. This research outcome will reflect the overall IT adoption and IT management of Thai public higher education institutions.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been proved as the effective way to help enhance brand perception and increase an opportunity for companies to gain more revenue. This widely well-known practice has been used across a variety of product categories for long time. In this study, we investigate factors that influence people to engage CSR programs and create favorable attitudes toward brand. Based on our hypotheses, we propose that social influence, which can be any activity on Social Network Sites (SNSs) that are related to CSR programs, can create brand awareness, influences people to engage CSR campaign and create favorable attitudes toward brand. We conducted an online survey that collected 129 opinions from respondents in Thailand and other several countries in Asia. According to the result, social influence has an effect on favorable attitudes toward brand and can influence people to engage CSR programs. However, there is no significant relation between social influence and brand awareness. We also found that people who engaged CSR programs will have favorable attitudes toward brand. Moreover, brand awareness also has an effect on favorable attitudes toward brand.

Case Studies of User Interface Design on Internet Banking Websites and Mobile Payment Applications in Thailand

Nagul Cooharojananone; Kanokwan Atchariyachanvanich

This chapter details two case studies on the user interface design, one on internet banking websites and the other on mobile payment applications in Thailand, focusing on the effect of usability factors on the intention to use the application. In the first case study the current internet banking web sites were evaluated for eight factors (the design aesthetics, ease of use, efficiency, functionality, learnability, reliability, satisfaction and security) towards the intention to use factor. The second study evaluated mobile payment applications from different service providers to test which of the six factors (security, trust, service quality, design, usefulness and ease of use) will affect the intention to use factor. Multiple linear regressions and comparison of two means approach were used to test the hypotheses. In both cases, data were collected from randomly sampled university students with a variety of profiles. Interesting results on what university students think about the design of mobile payment applications and internet banking websites were revealed.
