The present article analyzes how the relationship between theory and politics takes place in the Brazilian feminist field and how this articulation gains strength in academia, setting up a critical position that is characteristic as a theoretical and methodological perspective. Among its fundamental axes, there are the theoretical-epistemological and methodological concerns, as it is understood that it is not possible to perform feminist science, except from an engaged, politically committed position. Thus, the concept of gender and its impacts on the theoretical and political fields problematizes and analyzes the methodological implications in this context of scientific research. Such analyses enable the deduction that the feminist debate is not separate from that of the scientific field in general, concerning the statute of science and the ways of generating knowledge, as also presented in the field of Social Psychology.

Our aim with this paper is to present the emergence of a new group of political subjects in the Brazilian feminist movement: young feminists. Throughout this text, we regard the ‘‘feminist movement’’ as a plural entity insofar as we point to the various groups and political subjects that make up the various currents of Brazilian feminism. We understand ‘‘political subjects’’ to be those who are constituted discursively by both power relations and the values defended by one or more social groups to which they belong (Melucci, 2001). This subject arose out of my (Adrião) doctoral research into the Brazilian feminist movement at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. A few years later, I (Barbosa-Araujo) began a Master’s dissertation in Psychology, studying young people in the Brazilian feminist movement and, since then, we have begun to work together in this field. Currently, we are middle-class feminists from the Northeast region of Brazil and involved in the women’s movement in the State of Pernambuco. I (Barbosa-Araujo), still considered within the movement to be a young feminist, work with public policy for women at the State of Pernambuco’s Department of Women’s Affairs, in the field of gender training. I (Adrião) am not a young feminist and work as a feminist academic at a public university. These specifics position us politically as well as ethically, and inform our theoretical and methodological perspectives (Haraway, 1995; Scott, 1999); our own experiences pass through and produce spaces of alterity in our meetings with young feminists.
