Abstract Soft magnetic properties up to the megahertz range were investigated for Fe(Cr,Nb)SiB amorphous alloys of thickness 6–18 μm prepared by a single-roll method in vacuum. A low magnetic core loss of 1.5–2.0 W cm−3 at 1 MHz and 1 kG was attained by annealing near their crystallization temperatures. The annealing leads to the precipitation of excess α-Fe particles, so the d.c. coercive force changes drastically over 1 Oe. The magnetomechanical resonance effect due to magnetostriction in the initial permeability decreases upon substitution of Fe by Cr or upon annealing at higher temperature.
