We have developed a new readout method using an optical system with a differential numerical aperture between forward and return optical paths (i.e., a differential numerical aperture (NA) method). This method realizes jitter merits for larger NA and wide tolerance for smaller NA. We will show calculated and measured results of jitter and tolerance for a 4.7 GB-digital versatile disk-random access memory (DVD-RAM) disk system due to the differential NA method.
