Keika Inouye; Elisete Silva Pedrazzani; Sofia Cristina Iost Pavarini

Keika Inouye; Elisete Silva Pedrazzani; Sofia Cristina Iost Pavarini; Cristina Yoshie Toyoda

This study aimed to evaluate the perceived quality of life of elderly patients with dementia and their respective family caregivers and identify correlations between variables. Participants (n=106) were elderly patients with Alzheimer attended by the Exceptional Medication Program in a city in the interior of Sao Paulo, and their respective caregivers. Measures of quality of life were obtained through the Quality of Life Assessment Scale on Alzheimers disease. Data were entered into a database in the Statistical Program for Social Sciences for descriptive analysis and Spearmans correlation. The total average score for patients and caregivers was 29.32 (sd=+/-6.27, xmin=16, xmax=42) and 38.83 points (sd=+/-5.62, xmin=29, xmax=49). The associated rho coefficient was (+)0.406 (p<0.005). This result indicates moderate correlation between quality of life of caregivers and elderly patients with dementia.

Keika Inouye; Elisete Silva Pedrazzani; Sofia Cristina Iost Pavarini

This study aimed to compare overall and dimension-specific perceptions of quality of life between a group of caregivers of elderly patients with Alzheimers disease and a group of non-caregivers, matched for sociodemographic variables. Quality of life was measured with the Quality of Life Evaluation Scale in Alzheimers Disease (Caregiver Version). Statistical analyses were performed (descriptive and ordinal logistic regression). Caregivers showed significantly higher odds of negatively evaluating the dimensions of physical health, disposition, mood, memory, you in general, and the capacity to perform leisure activities as compared to non-caregivers. Mean total quality of life score was 38.83 for caregivers and 41.81 for non-caregivers. The data suggest that contact with Alzheimers disease negatively influences the total score and some dimensions of quality of life for family caregivers.

Keika Inouye; Elisete Silva Pedrazzani

Objective The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between cognition and frailty in the elderly. Methods A systematic review on the currently existing literature concerning the subject was carried out. The search strategy included LILACS, SCOPUS, SciELO, PsycINFO, PubMed and Web of Science databases. Results A total of 19 studies were selected for review, from which 10 (52.6%) were cross-sectional and 9 (47.4%) longitudinal, and the majority Brazilian. All of the studies established a link between cognition and frailty. There was a relationship between components of frailty and the cognitive domains. Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), dementia and mortality were all evidenced in the relationship between frailty and cognitive impairment. Conclusion The theory remains limited, but results show the variables that appear to be linked to cognition and frailty in elderly. This data can help in implementing actions to improve the quality of life among elderly.

Keika Inouye; Elizabeth Joan Barham; Elisete Silva Pedrazzani; Sofia Cristina Iost Pavarini

The present study examines the relation between perceptions of quality of life and of family support among elderly people according to their level of social vulnerability and other sociodemographic characteristics. Interviews were conducted with six groups of 25 elderly people (N = 150), one group for each level of vulnerability, in a mediumsized municipality in Sao Paulo state, Brazil. The instruments used were: the Family Support Perception Inventory, Quality of Life in Alzheimers disease and the Brazilian Family Economic Classification Checklist. Statistically significant correlations indicate that levels of social vulnerability are directly related to socioeconomic measures, as expected, but also to perceptions of family support (total, consistent-affective, of adaptation and autonomy) and of quality of life.

Keika Inouye; Elisete Silva Pedrazzani; Sofia Cristina Iost Pavarini; Cristina Yoshie Toyoda

This paper aimed to compare the reports of patients and caregivers about how they perceive quality of life (QoL) in general and each of its dimensions in elderly with Alzheimers Disease (AD). The participants were elderly diagnosed with AD (n=53) attended by the Exceptional Medication Program in a city in the interior of Sao Paulo; and their respective family caregivers. The QoL measures were obtained through the Quality of Life Assessment Scale on Alzheimers Disease. The results showed statistically significant differences in the memory (p<0.05) and you in general (p<0.005) dimensions. Regarding the final score, the average in the patients version was 29.32 points (sd=6.27), against 28.33 points (sd=5.58) in the family version, p>0.100. Although the relative and patient reports were not identical, the results pointed to a high level of consistency among information.

Keika Inouye; Elisete Silva Pedrazzani; Sofia Cristina Iost Pavarini

This study aims to compare the general perception and each dimension of the quality of life (QoL) of an elderly group with Alzheimers Disease (AD) (n=53) to those of a similar group regarding the socio-demographic variables (n=53). The QoL measures were obtained through an Assessment Scale of the Quality of life in Alzheimers Disease, and the data were typed into a database in the program Statistical Program for Social Sciences for the execution of the statistical analysis (descriptive, Students ttest, Mann-Whitney and Chi-Square). Results showed that all dimensions of QoL measured by the instrument were statistically inferior in the group of elderly with AD. Regarding the total scores of QoL, the mean was 40.18 points for elderly without AD and 29.32 for elderly with AD, t(104) = 9.449, p<0.001. These results indicate that older people with AD present inferior levels of QoL, which suggests that AD has a negative influence in their perception of quality of life. This study aims to compare the general perception and each dimension of the quality of life (QoL) of an elderly group with Alzheimers Disease (AD) (n = 53) to those of a similar group regarding the socio-demographic variables (n = 53).
