THE aetiology of drug misuse is complex and multi- factorial. This paper argues the case for locating education about drugs firmly in the context of a broad programme of general health and social edu cation. It is based on the assumption that complex problems require sophisticated solutions. An outline design for a programme of personal and social edu cation is described and its main curricular elements are examined. The relationship between these com ponent parts and current drug education projects is then discussed. The broad personal and social edu cation strategy is contrasted with drugs-specific mass media-based publicity campaigns.

The Health Promoting School concept and recent developments in the Health Service in the UK place both schools and primary care under some pressure to form collaborative links. However, such collaboration is currently rare. Presents a case study of an example of effective collaboration and identifies the benefits and difficulties from the perspective of both the school and the general practice. An analysis is provided of the factors contributing to successful collaboration, and the role of creative arts as a vehicle for joint working is discussed.

Professor Keith Tones, Professor of Health Education, Leeds Metropolitan University, Calverley Street, Leeds LS1 3HE. The main purpose of this article is to consider the role of health promotion in mobilising and supporting community action for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). It will be argued that programmes which seek to address those factors underlying CVD experience are more efficient and effective than programmes which concentrate exclusively on specific disease entities. Above all, thc importance of a co-ordinated, community-wide approach in general and thc: use of ’community coalitions’ in particular will he emphasised. Finally the question of programme evaluation will he addressed and, where appropriate, lessons will be drawn from selected international heart disease prevention
