An undescribed bacterium capable of clearing tannic acid‐protein complexes has been isolated from ruminal contents of feral goats browsing tannin‐rich Acacia species. The bacterium is a Gram‐positive facultative anaerobe, characterized as a Streptococcus, but DNA‐DNA hybridization and 16S rDNA sequencing show that it is distinct from the common ruminal species Strep. bovis. We propose the name Streptococcus caprinus for this species. The type strain is Strep. caprinus 2.3, Australian Collection of Microorganisms (ACM) 3969. The bacterium grows in media containing at least 2.5% w/v tannic acid or condensed tannin and produces zones of clearing around colonies on nutrient agar plates with added tannic acid. Streptococcus caprinus is not a major inhabitant of domestic livestock, but is found in feral goats browsing tannin‐rich Acacia species, at a population of up to 2 times 106 cfu ml‐1 of rumen fluid.

As optical networks become more complex, the need for in-line monitoring of more than just channel wavelength, power and OSNR becomes compelling. In this paper we describe an asynchronous delay tap sampling technique coupled with statistical machine learning that enables a single monitor to measure multiple simultaneous impairments on multiple formats. We demonstrate the technique for simultaneous measures of CD and 1st order PMD on a 40 Gbit/s NRZ-DPSK signal.

We present two novel performance monitoring techniques for optically switched networks, based on asynchronous multi-tap sampling. We show that multiple simultaneous impairments can be separated and quantified by a single monitor.

We demonstrate a robust in-band OSNR monitor using polarization diversity and low-cost opto-electronics. The proposed technique offers relaxed manufacturing tolerances and is insensitive to extinction ratio, bit rate, chromatic dispersion and first order PMD.

Introduction The purpose of this research was to conduct a cost-analysis, from a public healthcare perspective, comparing the cost and benefits of face-to-face patient examination assessments conducted by a dentist at a residential aged care facility (RACF) situated in rural areas of the Australian state of Victoria, with two teledentistry approaches utilizing virtual oral examination. Methods The costs associated with implementing and operating the teledentistry approach were identified and measured using 2014 prices in Australian dollars. Costs were measured as direct intervention costs and programme costs. A population of 100 RACF residents was used as a basis to estimate the cost of oral examination and treatment plan development for the traditional face-to-face model vs. two teledentistry models: an asynchronous review and treatment plan preparation; and real-time communication with a remotely located oral health professional. Results It was estimated that if 100 residents received an asynchronous oral health assessment and treatment plan, the net cost from a healthcare perspective would be AU
