Paravertebral block and resection of upper thoracic sympathetic ganglions were performed on cases in which vascular disturbance of the spinal cord was considered partly responsible. Block was performed in 14 cases and clinical improvement was seen in 10 cases out of them while resection was considered effective in 2 out of 3 cases. The evoked EMG of patients was assumed recovery of a part of synaptic function in the ischemic cord after the block. On the other hand, the skin temperature of the lower extremity did not show considerable change and this supports the view that the restoration of clinical picture was not due to the improvement of the periphral circulation of extremities. From these observations, it would be well presumed that favorable effect of sympathectomy consists partly in the improvement of vascular disturbance of the spinal cord.

Blood flow of the femoral arteries of both sides was measured, and changes in sensitivity of the arteries to norepinephrine were studied in unilateral sym pathectomized canine hindlimbs, in order to demonstrate the presence of super sensitivity of arteries to norepinephrine after sympathectomy. Before injections of norepinephrine into the vein, the ratio of blood flow in the femoral artery on the sympathectomized side to that on the opposite side increased in L3-L5 and in L3-L7 sympathectomized hindlimbs. This ratio of blood flow decreased in inverse proportion to the increase of doses of norepinephrine admin istered into the vein in both groups, and finally the flow on the sympathectomised side became lower than that on the nonsympathectomized side. The dorsal pedal arteries on the L3-L5 sympathectomized side, which are subject to decentralization but not denervation, had a slight degree of supersen sitivity to norepinephrine. The saphenous arteries on the L3-L5 sym pathectomized side were incompletely denervated and showed a moderate degree of supersensitivity to norepinephrine. The saphenous and the dorsal pedal arteries on the L3-L7 sympathectomized side were denervated almost completely and showed a significant increase in sensitity to norepinephrine. These results provide evidence that supersensitivity to norepinephrine does occur in the arteries of sympathectomized canine hindlimbs.

colitis. Lipopolysaccharides which were extracted with phenol-water extract method from the human fetal colon were used as an antigen. The antibody in the sera of the patients with ulcerative colitis was examined by Middlebrook-Dubos method and five positive cases were obserbed in eleven patients. All of six controls containing O-type normal gave negative results. One mg of the same antigen was dissolved in 0.1ml of saline, and skin reaction was examined with intracutaneous injection into ulcerative colitis patients. The result was positive in five of the seven patients, four of which showed immediate-type reaction and one of which delayed- type reaction. In seven controls containing O-type normal, only one was equivocal. Ouchterlony test with the same antigen was negative in case of the sera of these seven patients. The correlation of the serum antibody and the skin test was extremely high.
