The focusing characteristics of a 6.9-in. projection CRT with a combined electromagnetic and electrostatic focusing system were improved for an HDTY-display application. To improve the focusing characteristics, a new densely packed phosphor screen with reduced spot growth due to light scattering within the phosphor screen was developed, together with an optimally designed unipotential focusing (UPF) electron gun. Furthermore, a new green phosphor was used to improve the luminance. As a result, beam spot diameters of 0.15 and 0.35 mm were achieved at cathode currents of 0.5 and 5 mA, respectively, with a luminance of 1.3 × 10 5 cd/m 2 at a cathode current of 5.0 mA. An experimental 46-in. TV set using this projection CRT achieved 900-TV-lines horizontal resolution and 1500-cd/m 2 peak luminance. In summary, this projection CRT improves the state of the art of HDTY displays

P-66: Analysis and Reduction of Moiré in Two-Layered 3D Display

Kentaro Oku; Yoshiteru Tomizuka; Yoshinori Tanaka

Simulator for moire in two-layered 3D displays has been developed and moire reduction has been investigated. Attachment of lens-array to a front surface of a rear LC panel is one of good solutions for moire reduction, while suppressing the deterioration of contrast and brightness of rear panel picture.

P‐16: Simulation and Analysis of Overall Raster Moire Patterns on Color CRTs

T. Inoue; H. Motousu; S. Mikoshiba; Akiyoshi Tobe; Kentaro Oku; Shoji Shirai

Generation mechanisms of various moire patterns are clarified, and a simulation technique of overall raster moire patterns appearing on the color CRT screen is developed. The moire patterns are found to be sensitive to the slope and curvature of the scan lines. The technique allows to determine various CRT design parameters.

Electrostatic focusing and electrostatic deflection systems with reduced aperture aberrations

Kentaro Oku; Masanori Maruyama; Masakazu Fukushima

Electrostatic focusing and electrostatic deflection (SS) electron beam systems have been investigated to increase the resolution of SS camera tubes. SS camera tubes have pattern electrodes formed on their inner walls. The pattern electrodes comprise deflection electrodes and a cylindrical electrode. The deflection electrodes form a band around the inner wall at one end of the tube. Four leads project longitudinally from this band, dividing the cylindrical electrode into four parts. An octopole lens is created around the leads of the deflection electrodes. To increase tube resolution, the electron optical characteristics were evaluated, taking into account the effects of the octopole lens. It was revealed that, due to the octopole lens, the aberration spot is not isotropic and its diameter is about three times that produced by a cylindrical lens. New pattern electrodes with zig‐zag shaped leads were devised. It was found that the aberration spot became almost round and its diameter was reduced to the value...

Kentaro Oku; Kazuhisa Oshita; Shoji Shirai; H. Miyazaki

Axi-asymmetric CRT electron gun simulator which includes the effects of cathode temperature, work function of cathode material and potential barrier near the cathode surface created by an electron beam has been developed. With the simulator, difference of cathode emitter materials, effects of cathode temperature on emission characteristics and transitional phenomena during cathode heating can be evaluated.

Generation mechanism and evaluation of overall raster moiré patterns on color CRTs

T. Inoue; H. Motousu; Shoji Shirai; Kentaro Oku; Akiyoshi Tobe; S. Mikoshiba

— An evaluation technique of overall raster moire patterns on color CRTs is developed. The technique can simulate any of the moire modes. Generation mechanisms of various moire patterns are clarified using the technique. It is found that the moire patterns, no matter how complicated, consist of four basic types: barrel, pincushion, elliptical, and hyperbolic types. The patterns are found to be sensitive to the scan line distribution. When the scan lines are curved, the pattern appearing on the upper screen is different from that on the lower screen. When the scan lines are tilted, the patterns have horizontal shifts. By observing the moire patterns, the scan line distribution can be estimated precisely.
