Effects of a Family-to-Family Support Program on the Mental Health and Coping Strategies of Caregivers of Adults With Mental Illness: A Randomized Controlled Study

Kerime Bademli; Zekiye Çetinkaya Duman

This randomized, controlled intervention study was carried out to investigate the effects of a Family-to-Family Support (FFS) program on the coping strategies and mental health status of caregivers of schizophrenia patients. Data were collected via a General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the Ways of Coping with Stress Scale (WCSS). During the first phase of the study, the FFS program was developed, followed by a second phase in which the participants of the study were identified and trained. In the third phase, trained caregivers trained other caregivers. The study sample consisted of 46 caregivers. We determined statistically significant differences in the mean GHQ scores of the FFS group over four measurements. In the WCSS subscales, the self-confident approach, optimistic approach and seeking social support approach scores of caregivers participating in the FFS program were high, while their helpless approach score was low. The FFS program had a positive impact on the coping strategies and mental health status of caregivers of schizophrenia patients.

Families of Chronic Psychiatric Patients: A Systematic Review

Zekiye Çetinkaya Duman; Kerime Bademli

This study aims to investigate the studies conducted with the families of chronic psychiatric patients in Turkey and determine the characteristics and scope of future studies. In order to map out the recent studies conducted with the families of psychiatric patients in Turkey national and international databases were reviewed and eventually 26 studies were found to be suitable for inclusion. Of 26 studies reviewed, 7 studies were experimental and 19 studies were designed as descriptive in which certain reference points were defined such as mental health conditions of the family, family burden, quality of life, functionality, expressed emotions and their needs for education. On the other hand, the experimental studies mostly focused on the effects of various psychoeducation intervention programs particularly designed for care givers on patients and families. It was concluded that there is an obvious insufficiency in the number studies and researches on defining stress management levels and burdens of the families of chronic psychiatric patients as well as intervention programs specially designed for such families. Particularly designed invervention programs and studies are warranted.

Kerime Bademli; Neslihan Lök; Ayten Kaya Kılıç

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was answer to the question: to what extent are the anger of the caregivers of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and their perceived level of burden are related? METHOD: The study is a descriptive and correlational study. The information form prepared by the researchers which questions the socio‐demographic information of the individuals along with the “Caregiving Burden Inventory” which examines the burden of the caregiver as well as “Trait Anger and Anger Expression Style Scale (TAAES)” which determines the anger levels of the caregivers were used. RESULTS: The caregiving burdens of the caregivers according to the score averages were determined as 11.88 ± 9.78 for time and dependency burden, 11.93 ± 8.46 for developmental burden, 8.47 ± 6.63 for physical burden, 5.61 ± 5.26 for social burden, 6.29 ± 5.25 for emotional burden and the total burden score was determined as 44.19 ± 26.75. According to the trait anger and anger expression style scale score averages; trait anger was determined as 15.12 ± 5.95, anger expression as 9.70 ± 3.43, anger‐in as 15.22 ± 4.02, anger control as 28.05 ± 5.57 and anger total score average as 68.11 ± 9.97. CONCLUSION: According to the results obtained from this study, caregivers of schizophrenia patients experience developmental, physical, social and emotional burdens in addition to trait anger. The caregivers of schizophrenia patients need knowledge and support in order to control the burden and the anger they experience during the caregiving process. HIGHLIGHTSIt found that caregiving burden and anger are correlated.Individuals who provide care to schizophrenic patients experience continuous anger in addition to their developmental, physical, social and emotional burden. It was determined that caregivers who were single, male, had been providing care for 1–5 years and literate had higher levels of continuous anger.

Family-to-family support program for caregivers of adults with mental illness

Kerime Bademli

Introduction: CaMKII regulates many pathways involved in the regulation of various cellular and molecular mechanisms that result in myriad health benefits. Exercise is a key activator of CaMKII, and shown to improve many functional activities in individuals who exercise compared with those who do not exercise, however the mechanism involved not yet fully elucidated, which became the objective of this study.T countdown to 2015 accountability report for maternal, newborn and child survival identified 74 priority countries with a high level of the maternal and infant mortality and South Africa featured on the list. This is a concern because despite being a middleincome country, being less dependent on foreign aid, having a stable macro economy and allocating 8.8% of GDP for health, the maternal health issues are high in South Africa. This research focuses on maternal and infant health in a resource constrained rural setting, with a special focus on adolescent pregnancy and promoting exclusive breast feeding. Hence adolescent and young mothers’ targeted maternal health promotion strategies are established with the support of two Non-governmental organizations (NGOs). As a community based participatory research project, this first time collaborative partnership utilized ten focus group discussions with 76 community stakeholders and semi-structured interviews with two sisters-in-charge from each primary health care facility in the study setting. Data on the stock status of World Health Organization identified life-saving priority medicines for women’s health was also collected at both PHCs. Feedback from the Community Health Workers (CHWs) has resulted in the development of a trainer’s manual that is context specific and culture-sensitive. Further, the readability tests are being carried out on these manuals so that it is appropriate for use by semi-literate CHWs when other NGOs adopt this program of adolescent pregnancy prevention based maternal health promotion. Once the trainer’s manual is ready after the field testing, the two NGOs will incorporate this into their existing program for sustainability.T relationship between physical activity (PA) and mental health (MH) is complex and intriguing, fairly more than the relationship between PA and physical health. While dose-response has heuristic value relative to the physiology of exercise, it fails to account for the cognitive and emotional experiences of the individual who performs the activity. Moreover, PA can facilitate positive MH outcomes (particularly regarding stress-management and mood-elevation) even in the absence of quantifiable physiological changes. Further, there is reason to believe that enjoyment and motivation are key factors in reaching the documented positive MH outcomes of PA participation. It makes a difference whether we move just for fun or because we have to, and how we move is even more a crucial factor. Building on these observations, the concept of mindful movement was proposed as a potential remedy for stress-based MH problems and self-esteem issues. Succinctly, when PA takes the form of mindful movement, one consciously experiences the movements of one’s body and is deliberately present in the moment of the movement, as if one becomes one’s own observer. Mindful movement promotes the experience of the powerful body-mind connection, which allows for greater well-being and life satisfaction, but it also helps clarifying what mindfulness is not. Currently, a cloud of confusion surrounding mindfulness holds the danger of exacerbating mental restlessness in individuals who hunt the wrong goal. Mindfulness is not about getting anywhere else, but about being where you are and knowing it. Thus, mindfulness is not the perfect escape from the hassles of daily living, but rather a way to live more wisely, so that the hassles of daily living do not get the best of us. Understanding this essential truth and the fine difference in meaning without the support of the body-mind connection, is quite a challenge. Hence, the existing risk that a popular trend aiming to promote psychological well-being could bring on more mental and emotional disturbances among the most vulnerable individuals. This oral presentation will take the audience on an exciting journey in the world of mindful movement, from its origins to an ideal future where being consciously present in the body and paying effortless attention to what is within and without, represent the normality, a future in which acceptance, harmony and self-actualization are natural-, rather than utopian features of mankind.
