Virtual reality design techniques for web-based historical reconstructions

Kevin Badni

Due to increases in personal computer power and available bandwidths, 3D worlds are becoming increasingly accessible over the Internet, allowing viewers to freely explore virtual constructed worlds. However, even with advances in computing power and bandwidths, creating realistic 3D worlds which are fast downloading and are pleasurable to navigate around requires a number of design techniques to be employed. The aim of this paper is to describe the design techniques used in a redesign of a web-based virtual reality reconstruction of an historical site describing how different techniques can be used to optimise download times yet retain historical realism. The techniques and processes can be used as a guide by any designer to help create lightweight realistic virtual models.

Cooking behaviours: understanding energy use to design persuasive applications

Luis Carlos Rubino de Oliveira; Val Mitchell; Kevin Badni

Electric cookers and kettles are often the highest electricity consumers amongst household appliances. Cooking requires several interactions with these appliances, and furthermore peoples behaviours play an important role in the energy consumption. This research is seeking to understand peoples behaviours whilst cooking and also identify the determinants of these behaviours. Energy monitoring, video recording and semi-structured questionnaires were used to gather this information. This knowledge will inform the development of an intervention aiming at reducing energy expenditure.

The collaboration of two different working practices enabling autonomous virtual reality artwork

Kevin Badni

This paper describes the collaboration process between a fine arts sculptor and a virtual reality (VR) designer resulting in the sculptor being able to autonomously produce a VR art exhibition. The two different creative methodologies are reviewed through interviews, observations and reflections. The development of the installation is recorded describing the decisions made and methods used to enable the sculptor to remain independent during his creative endeavour.
