Local and Member Buckling of H-Columns

Hiroshi Yoshida; Kouji Maegawa

ABSTRACT An analytical procedure by the finite strip method is presented for the local and the member buckling analysis of columns with any open or closed section composed of thin plates. Using this procedure the relations between local buckling of the flanges and the web of H-columns, the buckling of entire H-columns including flanges and web, and the member buckling associated with cross-sectional distortion are examined for two typical cross sections of H-shapes with various amounts of residual stresses.

The Buckling Strength of Orthogonally Stiffened Plates under Uniaxial Compression

Hiroshi Yoshida; Kouji Maegawa

ABSTRACT An analytical procedure by means of the finite strip method has been presented on the elastic and inelastic buckling strengths of members composed of longitudinally and transversely stiffened plate elements on edge compressions. Using this method, the effect of transverse stiffeners on the elastic and inelastic buckling strengths of plane plates stiffened by transverse stiffener(s) or longitudinal and transverse stiffeners is discussed. The numerical examples show that the improvement of buckling strength in the elastic and inelastic ranges can be expected using appropriate rigidity and arrangement of longitudinal and transverse stiffeners.

The optimum cross section of channel columns

Hiroshi Yoshida; Kouji Maegawa

Abstract An analytical procedure to determine the cross-sectional dimensions of channel columns with and without lips for given load and column length is presented under the assumption that the cross-sectional dimensions are most suitable when the ultimate strength of the plate elements and the overall buckling strength are reached simultaneously. Numerical examples for optimum cross-sectional dimensions of a plain and lipped channels are included.
