An event-driven approach with makespan/cost tradeoff analysis for project portfolio scheduling

Hsing-Pei Kao; Brian Wang; James Dong; Kuo-Cheng Ku

Project Portfolio Management (PPM) has become increasingly important in managing multiple projects simultaneously. However, during execution, the project portfolio is associated with considerable uncertainty that leads to resource contention among projects and schedule disruptions. Regarding the need to revise a schedule when unexpected events occur, we adopt an event-driven approach to develop a tradeoff decision framework for project portfolio scheduling and rescheduling. In the framework, High Level Petri nets, Activity-Based Costing and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) are applied in sequence to generate feasible schedules, estimate their makespan and costs, and select the best compromise schedule. This framework is advantageous in the evaluation of scheduling performance from a multi-criteria perspective and the incorporation of both objective and subjective measurements in the decision process.

Ontology-based knowledge management for joint venture projects

Kuo-Cheng Ku; Anthony Wensley; Hsing-Pei Kao

When enterprises engage in strategic joint venture projects, communication, knowledge sharing and management issues are inevitable and complex problems. Problems relating to communication, knowledge sharing and management issues generally occur in more than one phase of joint venture projects and involve various different domains. This study reviews issues related to knowledge management in the context of joint ventures (JV) from both macro and micro perspectives by using an ontology-based approach to analyze complex knowledge management (KM) issues in the context of the Integrated Circuit (IC) industry. This study presents a framework for an ontology-based model to analyze the knowledge management processing of joint ventures in the IC industry, and uses the IC foundry industry as an example to explore implementation issues. This framework uses a conceptual enterprise ontology (EO) model and domains of EO to analyze the process of EO. Moreover, data from the IC foundry industry is used as a case study. This study aimed to assist managers in increasing the possibility of success in dealing with complicated JV projects.

A collaborative model for controlling the green supply network in the motorcycle industry

Tsai Chi Kuo; Chia Wei Hsu; Kuo-Cheng Ku; Ping-Shun Chen; Chih Hung Lin

Lately, rapid development of new cities in developing countries (such as India, China, and Vietnam) has accelerated the growth of the motorcycle industry in these markets. In the past, with respect to the motorcycle industry, the lack of adequate systems to control the quantity of overloaded polluting products has led to serious environmental problems. In order to reduce damage to the environment, this paper presents a process-based reference model and information system that can be used by the motorcycle industry to better manage and control the quantity and quality of the supply network. The IDEF (integration definition) tool set is applied to describe the overall operational workflow. An object-oriented, analytical approach is used to represent the architecture of the collaborative model. A prototype platform is constructed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model in controlling the supply network of materials and to show the improved communications.

Advertising Coral Reefs with Underwater Panoramas: An Application Study on Presenting Information to Prospective Divers

Tsen-Chien Chen; Ta-Chung Ying; Kuo-Cheng Ku

This paper describes the development and empirical practice of the underwater panorama system at two landmark dive spots at Green Island, Taiwan. Recreational scuba diving has become popular on coral reefs. Information highlighting dive spots can assist prospective customers with selecting their dive destinations. Underwater panoramas are a new approach for presenting such tourist attractions. The systems hardware includes a tailored cylindrical housing containing a spherical digital video camera. Its panoramic images enable people to come closer to the real underwater world. Footage can be viewed using PCs, laptops, tablets, and other common digital viewing appliances. The imagery streams give visitors a spherical preview of the underwater world at a specific dive spot. In a still panoramic image, the underwater features of the dive spot are supplemented with location-based service and tourist information, thereby presenting a rapid reference to potential viewers.

VIRTUAL INTER-FIRM COLLABORATIVE FRAMEWORK—THE CASE OF AN IC FOUNDRY JOINT VENTURE PROJECT

Kuo-Cheng Ku; Hsing-Pei Kao

The design new production and logistics process in a joint venture is crucial to its business success. Joint ventures are common in IC industry, however, much time and resources are used in handling negotiation, which ultimately can delay the implementation of joint venture itself, thereby causing tremendous expected losses to both parties. Therefore, we propose a virtual collaborative framework to assist in analyzing and designing logistic process for inter-firm collaboration in IC industry. We have adopted the enterprise ontology theory to deal with knowledge-sharing problems involving joint venture partners. Additionally, several analytical methods, including causal loop diagram, process chain diagram and UML, are proposed for analyzing various issues at different levels to design a virtual prototype for the joint venture.
