Egg Development and Morphology of Larva and Juvenile of the Oryzias latipes

In order to monitor the developmental features of embryos, larvae, and juveniles of Oryzias latipes (Temminck and Schlegel), Oryzias latipes was caught in river of Shinduck-dong, Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, on May 2011, and experiments were carried out in Ichthyology laboratory at Chonnam National University. The blastodisc step was the first level for natural spawning. The optic vesicle, Kupffers vesicle, myotome began to appear 75 hours 57 minutes later. After blastodisc development, the pectoral fins were made at 143 hours 37 minutes and the tail was separated started at the same time. Hatching was observed at 167 hours 27 minutes after blastodisc. The total length of the hatched larvae was 4.95~5.10 mm (mean, 5.01 mm), the mouth and anus were opened. Larvae used yolk completely after 3 days after hatching. The total length larvae was 5.45~5.56 mm (mean, 5.52 mm) after 8 days after hatching, and appeared the stems for tail. The stems pectoral, anal fin were showed after 14 days and the stems dorsal, ventral fin were appeared after 19 days. For 35 days after hatching, the total length of larvae 13.95~15.30 mm (mean, 14.64 mm), and at this time, fins and body were transferred like the adult Oryzias latipes.

Comparative stomach contents and growth of the juvenile black rockfish Sebastes inermis reared in illuminated and unilluminated cages

The principal objective of the present study was to determine the positive effects of artificial illumination on the juvenile black rockfish Sebastes inermis by comparing stomach contents and growth between juveniles exposed to light and those maintained in the absence of light. The major prey items of juvenile black rockfish in illuminated cages were: copepods (%IRI=62.6); amphipods (%IRI=36.7); and polychaetes (%IRI=0.3), whereas those, in unilluminated cages were: copepods (%IRI=93.3); amphipods (%IRI=6.1); and polychaetes (%IRI=0.4). The specific growth rates of the juveniles reared in illuminated cages (0.67%) were significantly higher than those juveniles maintained in the unilluminated cages (0.27%).

Anti-angiogenesis and anti-adipogenesis effects of Anthrisci radix extract

Natural products in Chonnam, the Republic of Korea were screened via anti-angiogenesis experiments, and one candidate product of A. radix extract (ARE) was identified. A. radix extract (ARE) exerted dose-dependent inhibitory effects against angiogenesis, adipogenesis, and cell adhesion. ARE exhibits an angiogenesis inhibitory effect superior to that of the EGCG from the green tea leaves. The expression level of angiogenesis and adipogenesis-related signal molecules in the Western blotting was reduced by increasing the amount of added ARE. Moreover, a diet supplemented with ARE was deemed more effective in inducing weight loss in LB mice than a representative synthetic diet drug, orlistat, which incidentally caused the side effects of denuding the mice of their hair. These results indicate that ARE may prove to be a useful anti-adipogenic compound, and the in vitro results may be reflected at a later time under in vivo conditions.

Fluctuation in abundance and species composition of fishes by bottom otter trawl in coastal waters of Geumodo, Yeosu

A species composition and population structure of fish, collected 16 times by bottom otter trawl in the coast of Geumo Island, from February 2002 to November 2005, was investigated. The fish species caught by bottom otter trawl from year 2002 to 2005 was entirely 72 species, 41 classes, and 12 orders, and the number of appearance and biomass was 5,999 individuals and 287,902.1g, respectively, being of the Perciformes(31 species and 19 classes; 43.1% in total number of species appeared) as a dominant species. 638 individuals of Leiognathus nuchalis which was 10.6% in total fish were appeared and 465 individuals of Konosirus punctatus(7.8%), 449 individuals of Engraulis japonicus(7.8%). biomass of Sebastes schlegeli was 33,258.7g as a dominant species(11.6% in total fish appeared) and 18,821.1g of Liparis agassizii(6.5%), 16,708.0g of Konosirus punctatus(5.8%). The diversity index of species per months of the collected by a small otter trawl in coastal water of Geumodo from year 2002 to 2005 was 2.860-3.639 and the evenness index was 0.825-0.887 in case of dominance index was 0.224-0.268 against the evenness index. The similarity of community structure per yearly was very high because of the relative difference(0.006), which was the least in 2004 and 2005.

Early Life History of the Sevenband Grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus from Korea

This study is conducted to monitor the morphological developmental features of the egg development, larvae and juvenile of Epinephelus septemfasciatus, the fertilized eggs were gotton using artificial insemination. Matured parents are collected from marine caged fish farms in Geomun-ri, Samsan-myeon, Yeosu-si, Jeollanamdo Korea in June 2012. The fertilized eggs were pelagic eggs containing one oil globule, and measured 0.81~0.89 mm (0.85±0.04 mm, n=50) in diameter. In regard to rearing environment, the water temperature is 21.0~23.0°C and the salinity is 32.0~33.2‰. Hatching was observed from 48 hours after fertilization, the mouth and anus of prelarvae was not opened but had egg yolk at newly hatched. 4 days after hatching, the mouth and anus of postlarvae was opened and began to eat Rotifer and was measured 2.40~2.49 mm (2.45±0.03 mm n=10) in total length. 12 days after hatching, postlarvae was measured 3.77~4.67 mm (4.27±0.33 mm) in total length, its the second pole tide of dorsal fin and the first pole tide of pelvic fin was extended longitudinally. 71 days after hatching, juvenile was measured 40.5~45.4 mm (42.6±2.04 mm) in total length. Seven bands were observed in body, and pole tides of dorsal and pelvic fins were shortened.

Characterization of angiogenesis inhibitor effect of green tea seed extract

Abstract Green tea seed was extracted with absolute ethanol, and the green tea seed extract (GTSE) was subjected to assays for toxicity, antioxidant ability, angiogenesis inhibitory effects and cell adhesion, as well as western blotting, and an in vivo experiment against 4 high‐ranking adult cancers in Korea. Our series of experimental data demonstrated that GTSE has an antioxidant ability superior to that of EGCG in the green tea leaf, and also exhibits a profound high tumor growth inhibitory activity on a variety of cancer cell lines, as well as nude mice infected with cancer cells. GTSE was identified as a natural anticancer compound showing excellent angiogenesis inhibition and cancer cell suppression abilities. Our preliminary observations also indicate that GTSE may be another potential source of natural dietary antioxidants and also may be applicable as a novel natural anticancer agent.

Body Composition of Black Rockfish Sebastes schlegeli Fed on Diets Containing Different Levels of Turmeric Curcuma longa L.

This study investigated the effect of diets supplemented with different levels (0, 1, 3, and 5 %) of turmeric Curcuma longa L. powder (TP) on the body composition of black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. Fish weighing g were fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. Adding TP decreased crude lipid levels and increased crude protein and ash levels. Abundant fatty acids in the TP-added group were C16:0, C18:1 n-9 (cis), and C22:6 n-3. The major amino acids in samples were glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, leucine, alanine, lysine, and arginine.

Nutritional Characteristics of Juvenile Black Rockfish Sebastes schlegeli Fed a Diet of Fig Leaf Extract

The present study investigated the effect of diets supplemented with different levels (0, 1, 3, and 5 %) of fig leaf ethanol extract (FLEE) on the nutritional composition of black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli. Fish () were fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. Adding FLEE decreased crude lipid levels and increased crude protein and ash. Among the three organic acids in the whole body of black rockfish, lactic acid was predominant, followed by citric acid and oxalic acid. Five free sugars were found in all groups. Fucose and glucose were the dominant free sugars in the FLEE-added group. The abundant fatty acids in the FLEE-added group were C16:0, C18:1-cis (n9), and C22:6n-3. The major amino acids in the samples were glutamic acid, aspartic acid, glycine, leucine, alanine, lysine, and arginine. The abundant free amino acids in the FLEE-added group were taurine, glutamic acid, alanine, leucine, and arginine.

Osteological Development of the Larvae and Juvenile of Bullhead torrent catfish, Liobagrus obesus

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the skeletal development of bullhead torrent catfish, Liobagrus obesus larvae and to utilize them as basic data for the taxonomic study of Liobagrus larvae. Skeletal development was observed by being divided into cranium, visceral skeleton, shoulder girdle bone, pelvic girdle bone and vertebra. On the first day after hatching, the pre-larvae had an average total length of 7.92 mm, and a line-shaped parasphenoid ossified in the cranium. In the jaw bone, the dentary supporting the lower jaw and the maxillary supporting the upper jaw were ossified. In the anterior abdominal vertebrae of the vertebra, seven centrums began to ossify and five neural spines ossified simultaneously. On the 3 day after hatching, pre-larvae had an average total length of 8.95 mm, and the prefrontal ossified in cranium. The number of abdominal vertebrae was increased to 14, and three parapophysis developed from the front side. On the 24th day after hatching, post-larvae had an average total length of 15.2 mm and the epural bone ossified in coccyx. The parhypural bone was ossified, and ossification of coccyx and pelvic girdle bone was completed. On the 30th day after hatching, the average total length of the juvenile was 17.8 mm, and the ossification of cranium and visceral skeleton was all completed while the preorbital and three suborbitals were ossified in the orbital region of the cranium.

Ovulation Induction Effect of Sevenband Grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus by Treating Hormones

Abstract This study aims to investigate how ovulation induction of sevenband grouper, Epinephelus septemfasciatus varies when treated with different hormonal substances such as ovaprim, pimozide, LHRHa, and HCG. As for LHRHa, we injected it in different concentrations: 50 ㎍/kg, 100 ㎍/kg, 150 ㎍/kg, and 200 ㎍/kg. All hormonal substances including LHRHa were injected into back muscles. As a result, ovulation occurred in all sample groups. The sample group injected with HCG released the largest amount of eggs, and the dimeter of eggs and oil globules were also significantly bigger than those of others. Fertilization rate, embryonic survival rate, and hatching rate were the highest in a LHRHa (100 ㎍/kg) +pimozide (1,000 ㎍/kg) group and buoyant rate in a LHRHa group. Ovulation rate was 100% when LHRHa was injected in different concentrations. The largest amount of eggs was released in 200 ㎍/kg. The diameter of eggs and oil globules were the biggest in 200 ㎍/kg and the smallest in 50 ㎍/kg. Fertilization rate showed no significant difference through all different levels of concentration: 94.6-95.3%. Buoyant rate was the highest in 100 ㎍/kg and embryonic survival rate and hatching rate in 150 ㎍/kg.
