Over the past decades, chemical bath deposition (CBD) has proven its suitability and has established itself as one of the prominent techniques for depositing different metal chalcogenide semiconductor thin films via ion-by-ion or by adsorption of colloidal particles from the chemical bath on the substrate. It is a simple, cost-effective and convenient method for large-scale deposition and has recently received a surge of interest. This article reviews the research progress in various methods or techniques including CBD for the preparation and study of the properties of metal chalcogenides. Various parameters for efficient preparation and variation in structural, morphological, compositional, optical properties, etc. are also briefly discussed.

Various heavy metal ions such as Pb2+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, UO2 2+, VO2+ and Bi3+ have been chromatographed on thin layer of carbamide-formaldehyde polymer impregnated with sodium diethyl- dithiocarbamate and its admixture with Na2 CO3 , NaCl, EDTA, H3 PO4 and NaOH. Common solvent namely acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, methanol and ethanol have been used as mobile phases. Semiquantitative determination of Hg2+, Bi3+ and Ni2+ by visual comparison of color intensities on the TLC plates as well as by measurement of spot area was attempted.

A sensitive spectrophotometric method for determination of dicofol in subparts per million levels is described, which is based on Fujiwara reaction. Dicofol on alkaline hydrolysis gives chloroform, which reacts with pyridine to produce red color. The color is discharged by addition of glacial acetic acid. The glutaconic aldehyde formed reacts with 4-aminoacetanilide to gave an orange-red dye which is extractable in 3-methyl-1-butanol. The extracted dye shows absorption maximum at 525 nm. Beers law is obeyed in the range of 0.025–0.25 μg mL−1. Important analytical parameters such as time, temperature, reagent concentration, acidity etc. have been optimized for complete color reaction. Sandells sensitivity and molar absorptivity for the system were found to be 0.000343 μg cm−2 and 1.077 × 106 L mol−1cm−1, respectively. The proposed method is satisfactorily applied to microlevel determination of dicofol in various environmental samples.

The synthesis and characterization of nanocrystalline Cd0.5Zn0.5S thin solid films is reported in the present paper. Chemical bath deposition, a direct low cost technique that involves metal ions (Cd2+ and Zn2+) source, a complexing agent and a chalcogen (sulphur) source was used to prepare thin films of Cd0.5Zn0.5S at a temperature of 70°C (343 K), with pH of 11 and deposition time of 2.5 hours. The characteristics of the prepared Cd0.5Zn0.5S thin films were investigated by their structural and optical properties and the effect of annealing on these properties were also studied.

In the present paper we reported the method to prepare ZnO nanoparticles by alkaline precipitation method for the degradation of an azo dye. We have used ZnO nanoparticles assisted with UV light irradiation to investigate the photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes. The ZnO photocatalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence.
