Teaching Probability in Junior High School Through Problem Solving: Construction and Analysis of a Probabilistic Problem

This text proposes a probabilistic problem aimed at teaching probability through problem solving in the first 2 years of junior high school. This problem’s adaptability in terms of its level of complexity and the ease of adjusting it to students’ level of mathematical development makes it highly versatile.

Mise à l’épreuve des fonctions d’un dispositif d’aide aux élèves en difficulté en mathématiques

RésuméDans le cadre d’un projet de recherche collaborative, nous avons modélisé un dispositif d’aide aux élèves en difficulté en mathématiques en tant que système didactique auxiliaire assumant quatre fonctions : chronogénétique, mesogénétique, topogénétique et la fonction dialectique de suspension et d’anticipation de l’action. Nous mettons ici à l’épreuve ce modèle théorique à partir des analyses d’implémentations dans deux classes. Ces mises à l’épreuve nous permettent de questionner les différentes fonctions et de faire évoluer le prototype de départ.AbstractAs part of a collaborative research project, we created a learning aid to help students with difficulties in mathematics. As an auxiliary didactic system, the learning aid assumes four functions: chronogenetic, mesogenetic, topogenetic, and the dialectical function of suspension and anticipation of action. Here we put the theoretical model to the test by analyzing its implementation in two classrooms. This testing enables us to examine the various functions and further develop the model’s original prototype.

Les décalages entre l'activité potentielle et celle attendue par l'enseignante qui soumet un problème à ses élèves: Quels effets possibles sur l'apprentissage?

RésuméCet article vise à étudier les décalages entre les activités potentielles que peut générer la proposition d’un problème mathématique à des élèves du début du secondaire et les activités attendues par les enseignants, qui peuvent être différentes des activités potentielles. Nous nous appuyons sur un modèle d’analyse des pratiques enseignantes pour analyser la nature de ces décalages à travers la gestion d’une situation de résolution d’un problème élaboré et expérimenté par l’enseignante elle-mêe. Nous identifions et discutons trois types d’impacts potentiels de ces décalages sur l’apprentissage des élèves et nous nous questionnons sur la fonction des problèmes et les activités qu’ils génèrent.AbstractThis article aims to examine the discrepancies between the potential activities that can be generated by mathematical problems presented to students in early secondary school and the activities expected by their teachers, which may differ from these potential activities. Using a framework for the analysis of teaching practices, we analyse the nature of these gaps throughout the management of a problem-solving situation developed and tested by the teacher herself. We identify and discuss three kinds of potential impacts that these discrepancies may have on students’ learning and we examine the function of these problems and the activities they generate.
