Abstract Electronic mapping can serve as a powerful educational tool in the instruction of classroom students and in the administration of campuses and school districts. Electronic mapping’s availability in the educational setting is because of the accessibility of geographic information systems (GIS) that provide mapping and cartography functions in a cost-effective manner. The appropriate integration of GIS can strengthen the teaching of essential elements in geography and social studies as well as address school administration issues (e.g., facilities planning, bus routes).

While facing challenges and crises in the leadership of schools, school administrators need to have three vital characteristics: up-to-date knowledge, relevant skills, and sound dispositions. Self-referent dispositions that refer to thoughts and feelings about ones knowledge and skills play a key role in the success of professionals in carrying out day-to-day activities. One self-referent construct is self-efficacy, which pertains to a persons confidence in their knowledge and skills. This chapter discusses social cognitive theory, in general, and self-efficacy, in particular, to describe how the self-efficacy construct is relevant to school administrators’ ability to lead schools.

ABSTRACT Disruptive students potentially pose significant problems for campus administrators as they strive to maintain a safe campus environment conducive to learning while not violating the legal rights of the students. Maintaining a safe campus is important because increasing numbers of students with mental and cognitive disorders are enrolling in college and university classes. This article examines selected court cases involving disruptive students who alleged violations of their First Amendment right of free speech, due process rights under the Fourteenth Amendment, and violations of the rights afforded them under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act. The rulings in these cases were used to develop campus guidelines and procedures to address the actions of disruptive students.

Abstract Physical assault against school personnel is a serious problem, although not highly publicized. This workplace violence can result in debilitating injury to school employees along with major monetary costs. This article looks at legal issues that address physical assault against school personnel as well as the roles professional associations have taken in support of school personnel. Recommended school district policies along with campus practices for minimizing workplace violence, especially physical assault against school employees, are provided.
