Age and weight were determined by direct measure in 30 feed-restricted female rats studied from weaning to first estrus, and compared to well fed controls. At the first estrus the average weight of well fed rats did not differ from that of the feed-restricted groups. Mean ages at vaginal opening and first estrus in the feed-restricted animals were however greater.

PROGRAMA DE LIVROS DIDÁTICOS E MATERIAIS DE INSTRUÇÃO OPAS/OMS

O Programa de Livros Didaticos e Materiais de Instrucao da Organizacao Pan-Americana da Saude da Organizacao Mundial de Saude (OPAS/OMS) tem o proposito de contribuir para a formacao de recursos humanos na area de saude, promovendo o habito de leitura entre os estudantes. A oportunidade para a aquisicao de livros-texto a precos reduzidos em relacao ao mercado facilita a formacao de uma biblioteca de enfermagem, assim como o instrumental basico para o aperfeicoamento tecnico-cientifico do estudante. De acordo com os termos de um Convenio assinado entre a OPAS/ /OMS e os Ministerios da Saude e da Educacao e Cultura, o Programa funciona em diversas Universidades. A Escola de Enfermagem da USP desde 1975 esta vinculada ao Programa atendendo aos pedidos dos estudantes. A partir de 1980 foram incluidos no Programa e postos a disposicao de estudantes estetoscopios e aparelhos de pressao. No momento existem 27 titulos de livros-texto basicos e de enfermagem colocados a venda, e e de interesse do Programa que outros livros editados no Brasil sejam nele incluidos, para melhor embasamento teorico dos profissionais de enfermagem.

At first estrus the feed-restricted rats were older and, proportionally to the age, leaner than the well fed animals. They had attained a greater proportion of protein and lesser proportion of water and fat; however the animals of the two restricted diet groups and the well fed group had the same weight. First estrus was simultaneous with vaginal opening in 90% of the well fed animals, in 20% of the group I and in 0% of the group II.

The present studies were performed to determine the variation in length of the estrous cycle of undernourished female rats. The two groups studied received 4% and 8% protein diets, the first one group ad libitum and the second one controlled in quantity so that the animals of the two groups have the same growth rate.

VALOR NUTRITIVO DA ASSOCIAÇÃO DE FEIJÃO JALO (Phaseoulus vulgaris) COM FEIJÃO SOJA (Glycine max)

The authors developed an experimental study with albino rats, in order to evaluate nutritional value of three different mixtures of yellow beans and soya, determining NPR (Net Protein Ratio) and NPU (Net Protein Utilization) according to BENDER & DOELL (1957) index. They verified that the association of yellow bean and soya, in the three proportions that were studied, efficiency of protein utilization increased considerably when compared to yellow beans used alone. There was no significative difference between 75/25 and 50/50 mixture proportions, but there were differences among these two and the 25/75 mixture, wich, revealed proteic value similar to the soya alone.
