Thirteen species of Phycus Walker are recorded from the Afrotropical region. All the species are keyed and described. Antennae and male terminalia are illustrated. Caenophanomyia Bezzi, 1902, Paraphycus Becker, 1923, and Caenophaniella Seguy, 1941, are synonymized with Phycus for the first time. The following seven species are described as new: gracilis (Gambia), annulipes (Kenya), robustus (Nigeria), stylatus (Kenya), mirabilis (Rhodesia), flavus (Transvaal) and fulvus (Namibia). New combinations are Phycus rufofemoralis (Krober, 1933), and P. kroeberi (Brauns, 1924); both were originally described in Caenophanomyia. New specific synonyms are: Caenophaniella nigra Seguy, 1941 = Phycus rufofemoralis (Krober, 1933); Phycus maculipennis Krober, 1939 = Phycus breviscapus Brunetti, 1929; Paraphycus piceus Becker, 1923 = Phycus rufofemoratus Krober, 1913; Phycus bicinctus Krober, 1924 = Phycus marginatus Krober, 1912; Phycus sobrinus Brunetti, 1929 = Phycus marginatus Krober, 1912.

Neotabuda Krober (1931) is a widespread genus of therevids in southern Africa. Its possible monophyly is discussed, and a sister-group relationship with the Palaearctic genus Salentia A. Costa is motivated. Twenty species are recognized, only five of which were described previously. All species are keyed, described and figured. They are arranged in two species-groups, each with two subgroups, and the phylogenetic relationships of these are discussed. The fifteen new species are: incrassaia (Cape Prov.), latifrons (Cape Prov.), longestylata (Cape Prov.), lanigera (Cape Prov.), pilosa (Cape Prov.), subpilosa (Cape Prov.), turneri (Cape Prov.), multisetosa (Cape Prov.), longicornis (Cape Prov.), tomentosa (Namibia), major (Namibia), natalensis (Natal Prov.), diversicornis (Natal Prov.), truncata (Mozambique, Natal Prov.), and nigropilusa (Cape Prov.). The five previously described species are (in their original combination): Thereva anthracina Loew, 1858; Orthactia nigra Krober, 1912; Pachygenia nitida Krober, 1912; Actorthia capensis Krober, 1931; and Neotabuda ater Krober, 1931. Pachygenia Krober, 1912 and Neotabuda Krober, 1931 are placed in new synonymy, but Pachygenia Krober cannot be used because of its preoccupation by Pachygenia Motschulsky (1874).

Hoplosathe n.gen. is erected for an obvious monophyletic group of therevids occurring in the arid southern parts of the Palaearctic region, ranging from Morocco to Mongolia and China. The species are associated with salty sand flats and salines in deserts and semideserts. Nine species are recognized. Three of these were earlier arranged in Psilocephala Zetterstedt: frauenfeldi (Loew, 1856), formosa (Loew, 1871) and brunni (Krober, 1912). Six new species are described: capricornis n.sp. (Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, Kasachstan and Turmenistan), tomentosa n.sp. (Tadzhikistan, Uzbekistan, Turmenistan, Transkaspia, Dagestan and Mongolia), brevistyla n.sp. (Iran), kozlovi n.sp. (Mongolia and China), richterae n.sp. (Caucasus) and distincta n.sp. (Morocco). All species are keyed, diagnosed and described; details of the male terminalia are illustrated.

Schoutedenomyia usambarensis n.sp. and S. rhodexiensis n.sp. are described from southern Tanzania and Rhodesia, respectively. Only one male and one female specimen of each species are known. A list of the 12 species of Schoutedenomyia Krober, 1936, now reported from tropical Africa are given. It is noted for the first time that the genus is well represented in the Oriental region.

Pentheria intermedia n.sp. is described on the basis of two male and two female specimens originating from Chirinda Forest in Rhodesia. A total of 10 species of Pentheria Krober, 1914 are now described.

The Tabanidae collected in the Philippines (Palawan, Balabac, Tawi Tawi and Mindanao) in 1961 by the Danish Noona Dan expedition are reviewed. Chrysops signifer Wlk. and 15 species of Tabanus L. are recorded. Among them T. balabacensis and T. subrubidus , both from Balabac, are described as new. The hitherto unknown female of T. pellus Phil. is described. Nearly all other records are new for the respective islands.

The species of the genus Haematopota Meig. occurring in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland are revised on the basis of all accessible material including types from various museums and private collections. Keys to, and short diagnosis, figures and notes on synonymy and distribution of, the six species involved are given. Four lectotypes are designated and three new synonymies are established. The difficult hispanica-group is discussed in an appendix.
