Abstract. The European species of the Hilara maura‐group are revised. Three species are described as new to science, namely, H.nitidorella sp.n., H.discalis sp.n. (both temperate Central and Western Europe) and H.mauroides sp.n. (Caucasus, male only). A further five species, H.hybrida Collin, H.femorella Zetterstedt, H.sulcitarsis Strobl, H.tyrolensis Strobl and H.bartaki Straka are redescribed, and H.eumera Loew, 1873 becomes a new synonym of H.nitidula Zetterstedt, 1838. Seven lectotypes are designated. All IS European species are keyed, the main differential characters are illustrated, and additional data on biology and distribution are given. The Hilara maura‐group is recognized as a monophyletic group within the genus, characterized by a set of apomorphous characters, and the hypothetical phylogenetic relationships of the species, classified into four natural complexes, are demonstrated.

Four Scandinavian species of Platypalpus Macq. are described as new to science, viz., P. hackmani sp.n. (=P. brevicornis (Zett.) sensu Frey, 1913, 1943), P. longicornioides sp.n., P. scandinavicus sp.n. and P. tuomikoskii sp.n. The male of P. zetterstedti Chv. is described for the first time and P. subbrevis (Frey) is redescribed. Some new synonymies are established: P. interjectus (Lundbeck, 1910) is a synonym of P. difficilis (Frey, 1907), P. acroleucus Frey, 1943 of P. leucothrix (Strobl, 1910), P. calcaratus (Collin, 1926) of P. pseudociliaris (Strobl, 1910), P. agillelus (Collin, 1926) of P. pallidicoxa (Frey, 1913), and P. tantulus (Collin, 1926) is a synonym of P. cryptospina (Frey, 1909). P. varius Walk. sensu Lundbeck, 1910 is P. analis (Meig., 1830), P. nigrosetosus (Str.) sensu Frey, 1943 is P. agilis (Meig., 1822), and P. microcerus Frey, 1943 is a species of the genus Tachydromia.

The Siberian Platypalpus microcerus Frey, 1943 is redescribed on the basis of two syntype females deposited in Coll. Frey, Helsinki, and is referred to the genus Tachydromia Meig. The species is close to T. terricola Zett. A lectotype is designated.

J. W. Zetterstedt described between I8I9-I850 thirty-seven species of the Empidid subfamily Tachydromiinae in combination with Tachydromia Meig. (30), Tachypeza Meig. (5), Drapetis Meig. (I) and Empis L. (I). A revision of these species has been based on a study of Zetterstedts Collection at Lund, Sweden. Lectotypes or holotypes for thirty-six of Zetterstedts species are designated and a further two lectotypes for Platypalpus pallipes (Fall., I8I5) and Platypalpus boreoalpinus Frey, I943 have been selected. Five species are redescribed, viz., Platypalpus brevicornis (Zett., I842)—the male sex is described for the first time—, Crossopalpus curvinervis (Zett., I842), comb.nov., Platypalpus sordidus (Zett., I838), Platypalpus unguiculaws (Zett., I838) and Platypalpus boreoalpinus Frey, I943. The following species are described as new: Platypal pus confiformis sp.n., Platypalpus zetterstedti sp.n., and Platypalpus alpinus sp.n. Some new synonymy is established: Symballophthalmus scapularis Collin, I96I is a synonym of Symballophthalmus fuscitarsis (Zett., I859), Tachydromia gilvipes Coquillett, I900 and Platypalpus xanthopodus Melander, I928 are synonyms of Platypalpus unguiculatus (Zett., I838), Platypalpus extricatus (Collin, I96I) is a synonym of Platypalpus Iongiseta (Zett., I842), Drapetis nigripes Zett., I859 is a synonym of Drapetis pusilla Loew, I859, Tachydromia parvicornis Zett., I859 is a synonym of Crossopalpus nigritellus (Zett., I842). A new name Platypalpus anomalinervis nom.nov. is proposed for Tachydromia curvinervis Collin, I94I (nec Zett., I842), described from Ussuri. Platypalpus candicans (Fall.) is still known only from the female sex, the recorded males are represented in Zetterstedts Collection by males of Platypalpus longiseta (Zett.) (syn. extricatus Coll.) and Platypalpus stabilis (Coll.). Also Lundbeck (I9I0) described the male sex of P. candicans (Fall.) and P. major (Zett.) by mistake.

The Tabanidae collected in the Philippines (Palawan, Balabac, Tawi Tawi and Mindanao) in 1961 by the Danish Noona Dan expedition are reviewed. Chrysops signifer Wlk. and 15 species of Tabanus L. are recorded. Among them T. balabacensis and T. subrubidus , both from Balabac, are described as new. The hitherto unknown female of T. pellus Phil. is described. Nearly all other records are new for the respective islands.

The species of the genus Haematopota Meig. occurring in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland are revised on the basis of all accessible material including types from various museums and private collections. Keys to, and short diagnosis, figures and notes on synonymy and distribution of, the six species involved are given. Four lectotypes are designated and three new synonymies are established. The difficult hispanica-group is discussed in an appendix.
