Thus Rousseau sets the format for the literary expatriate, who is so much the ideal citizen of his own country that he opposes its entrenched establishments and can express its genius only in the freedom of exile. Just so, for the expatriates of the early twentieth century-Hemingway, Joyce, Stein, Picasso, Miller, et al.-one went away in order to look back with a cleansed eye, to express the true faith in languages sharpened by distance, if not detachment.
