A report is given of the results of scintillography of the salivary glands with various pathological conditions, using 131I and 99mTcO− as the active substance, and the parasympathicomimeticum, pilocarpine nitrate, as an agent selectively to interfere with the distribution and movements of radioactivity between various tissue/fluid compartments. The results show, among other things, that utilization of pilocarpine nitrate is of advantage in the evaluation of both the function and the scintillographic appearance of diseases of the salivary glands. Simultaneously the results strongly suggest that a conventional scintillography of the salivary glands, performed alone, did not give sufficient information about the nature and localization of the disease. Alle diese nicht wirksamen Verbindungen enthalten die im Molekfll des wirksamen Merbromins vorhandene Atomgruppierung ether zum Quecksilber o-stXndigen phenolischen Hydroxylgruppe nicht. Um zu prfifen, ob auch andere organische Quecksilber-Verbindungen mit der gleichen Atomgruppierung stimulierende Wirkung auf Lymphocyten zeigen, wurden das 3-Hydroxymercuri-salicylsaure Na [4], das 2-Chlormercuri-4-methylphenol [5] und das 3-Hydroxymercuri-5-sulfosalicylsanre Ammonium [5] untersucht. Early and accurate diagnosis of disease—both of malignant and of non-malignant character—involving the bones and blood vessels of the skull, spine and pelvis is of the utmost importance. However, the angiographic visualisation of various pathological conditions within the spine is particularly difficult and on occasion impossible. This is primarily due to the peculiar anatomical and physiological nature of the meningo-rachnoidian venous system (MRVS) (Batson, 1940; Borak, 1942; Bachman and Sproul, 1955; Abrams, 1961). We have developed a new technique for the introduction of a radio-opaque medium intravenously directly into the MRVS through the intercostal veins (Setala, Tarkiainen and Nyyssonen, 1966; Tarkiainen, 1966). The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the accuracy of the technique in the light of one case randomly selected from our files of about 250 examinations. All surgical and radiographic measures were performed by the authors.
