Social Class and Modes of Communication

Differences in modes of communication, as reveled in interviews with lover- and middle-class respondents, are more than differences in intelligibility, grammar, and vocabulary. Differences are found in number and kinds of perspective, ability to take the listeners role, use of classifying or generalizing terms, and devices of style to order and implement communication. These differences in speech can be accounted for by differences in thinking and perceiving and in the respondents relationship to the interviewer.

Trends in Pubuc Urban Psychiatry in the United States

In the context of trends in the social and economic life of the United States, a nascent model of public urban psychiatry is presented as a prediction. The model is presented as a set of propositions: (1) Public psychiatry is urban based and urban oriented. (2) Public urban psychiatry is pragmatic, eclectic, and existential. (3) Public urban psychiatry takes on the character of a mass service and mass transit system. (4) Public urban psychiatry is conceptually and operationally integrated into a human services and resources industry. (5) Public urban psychiatry is universally accessible and acceptable. (6) Public urban psychiatry is rationally organized according to the requirements of a communications network. These propositions describe the structure of public psychiatry as anticipated by the end of this century.
